Highlights
- ReElement Technologies has signed a long-term offtake partnership with POSCO International.
- The partnership involves supplying separated rare-earth oxides, scaling to over 3,000 metric tons through 2030.
- Aims to develop U.S. refining capacity for rare earth oxides, addressing midstream separation challenges outside China.
- Strategic collaboration supports national goals for domestic rare earth supply chains in the defense, EV, and industrial magnet sectors.
ReElement Technologies (opens in a new tab) (portfolio company of American Resources (opens in a new tab), NASDAQ: AREC) signed a long-term offtake partnership with POSCO International America (opens in a new tab) to supply separated rare-earth oxidesโNdPr, Dy, Tb, Yโscaling to >3,000 metric tons through 2030. The pact includes a joint feedstock task force (mixed concentrates + recycled magnet scrap) and co-development of U.S. refining capacity leveraging ReElementโs chromatographic separation platform.
Midstream separation/purification is the choke point outside China. If executed, the deal pairs ReElementโs tech with POSCOโs industrial footprint and customer accessโsupporting allied supply chains across defense/EV/industrial magnets. It also builds on the ReElementโPOSCO MOU announced Sept. 18, signaling real momentum from intent to volume.
REEx Assessment
Directionally correct and strategically meaningful: volumes, partners, and U.S. siting line up with national goals. However, investors should note whatโs still missing: detailed purity specifications and pricing formulas; definitive siting/timing of U.S. units; secured feedstock beyond the task-force concept; and capital expenditure and throughput milestones proving scale beyond pilot/early runs.
Key Investor Questions
- Where will primary refining capacity be located first, and when do commercial tons start?
- Are volumes back-ended (post-2027), and whatโs the step-up schedule to 3,000 t?
- What purity/oxide specs will POSCO accept for magnet-grade routes, especially for Dy/Tb additions?
- How much feedstock is recycled vs. mined, and who are the concentrate suppliers?
Stock lens (AREC)
Fundamentals: micro-cap $235M market cap; early-stage revenue; loss-makingโhigh execution and financing sensitivity. Technically: price near $3.16, well above 50-day ($1.8) and 200-day (~$1.0) moving averages; 52-week range $0.38โ$3.33. Momentum constructive, but expect volatility around funding and build-out news.
Bottom line for U.S. Rebuild
If ReElementโPOSCO delivers commercial-scale, magnet-grade oxides onshore, it meaningfully strengthens the U.S. midstreamโthe hardest link to replicate. Execution (feedstock, capex, uptime, spec) now matters more than headlines. We view todayโs announcement as credible and positive; the next proof points are commissioning timelines, signed offtake schedules, and initial delivery KPIs.
