Inside “China Rare Metal Valley”: Ganzhou Pushes Rare Earths Further Downstream Into Motors, Robotics, and Industrial Power

4 minute read.

Highlights

  • China is transforming its rare earth strategy from mineral control to dominating the entire industrial ecosystem, showcased at Ganzhou's 2026 Permanent Magnet Motor Conference where officials revealed plans for vertically integrated manufacturing spanning mining to intelligent equipment.
  • Ganzhou's โ€œChina Rare Metal Valleyโ€ now features a complete industrial chain with 11 national innovation platforms, including the National Rare Earth Functional Materials Innovation Center, focusing on permanent magnet motors critical for EVs, robotics, drones, and AI-era infrastructure.
  • While ex-China magnet ecosystems remain fragmented, Beijing is systematically embedding rare earths deeper into advanced manufacturing through coordinated industrial clusters, creating compounding long-term competitive advantages in automation and future industrial infrastructure.

Chinaโ€™s rare earth strategy is no longer just about controlling minerals. It is increasingly about controlling the industrial systems built on top of them. That reality was on full display May 20 at the 2026 Fifth China (Ganzhou) Permanent Magnet Motor Industry Innovation and Development Conference held in Ganxian District, Ganzhou, Jiangxi Provinceโ€”an event showcasing how Beijing continues converting rare earth dominance into higher-value manufacturing ecosystems.

The conference theme, โ€œChina Rare Metal Valley, Permanent Magnet Motors in Action,โ€ was more than branding. It reflects Beijingโ€™s effort to transform Ganzhou into a vertically integrated industrial hub spanning rare earth mining, materials processing, magnets, motors, intelligent equipment, and advanced manufacturing.

What Is โ€œChina Rare Metal Valleyโ€?

Ganzhou, long known as one of Chinaโ€™s most strategically important rare earth regions, has spent years building what officials now call โ€œChina Rare Metal Valley.โ€

The concept resembles a rare earth-focused industrial cluster designed to integrate:

  • mining,
  • refining,
  • magnet materials,
  • motor manufacturing,
  • R&D,
  • and downstream intelligent equipment industries.

Li Bo, chairman of the Chinese Society of Rare Earths, said Ganzhou has already formed a complete industrial chain from rare earth mining and materials preparation to permanent magnet motor research and manufacturing. He described the region as a national benchmark for innovation in rare earth permanent magnet industries.

That distinction matters. Permanent magnet motors are critical components in EVs, robotics, drones, industrial automation, wind turbines, defense systems, and AI-era manufacturing infrastructure.

China Moves Beyond Magnets

Local officials say Ganxian District and the Ganzhou High-Tech Zone are focusing on four major industrial chains:

  • rare earths,
  • tungsten,
  • cobalt-nickel-lithium materials,
  • and intelligent equipment manufacturing.

The region reportedly hosts 11 national-level science and technology innovation platforms and 19 provincial innovation platforms, including the Ganjiang Innovation Academy under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the National Rare Earth Functional Materials Innovation Center (NRE-FMIC).

Note the NRE-FMIC is operated by Guorui Tech Rare Earth Functional Materials Co., Ltd., and was established in 2019 and backed by Jiangxi University of Science and Technology (opens in a new tab) along with major industrial players including China Northern Rare Earth Group High-Tech Co., Ltd. (opens in a new tab) and Jiangxi Copper Corporation (opens in a new tab), the center serves as Chinaโ€™s flagship national hub for rare earth functional materials innovation. Since launch, it has built extensive R&D and commercialization infrastructure, secured 134 patents, contributed to 40 industry standards, and advanced projects tied to 5G, rail transit, renewable energy, hydrogen storage, and advanced alloys. The recognition highlights Beijingโ€™s accelerating push to integrate rare earth research, industrial policy, and downstream advanced manufacturing into a coordinated national innovation ecosystem.

Back to the conference, most importantly, officials say the area now supports a full chain from permanent magnet materials and motor components to motor integration and downstream intelligent equipment applications.

From a Rare Earth Exchangesโ„ข point of view the bigger story is industrial coordination. For Western governments and manufacturers, the signal should be increasingly difficult to ignore: China is not simply defending rare earth dominance. It is steadily embedding rare earths deeper into advanced manufacturing, automation, and future industrial infrastructure. At a time when ex-China magnet ecosystems remain fragmented and underdeveloped, Beijing continues building integrated industrial clusters capable of compounding long-term competitive advantage.
