The Assays Are In for Malawi's Mposa. Now Comes the Only Number That Matters: Recoverability

4 minute read.

Highlights

  • 200 assays average 525 ppm TREO across an 8-kilometer corridor beneath Mposa's heavy mineral sands deposit in southern Malawi.
  • 21% of the rare earth basket includes high-value magnet elements neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, and terbium critical for EVs and defense.
  • Recoverability via ammonium sulfate desorption testing at ANSTO remains the key unresolved question before any economic discovery can be claimed.
  • A confirmed dual-commodity project combining heavy mineral sands and clay-hosted rare earths could share infrastructure and materially improve project economics.
  • Largest shareholder Mota-Engil holds 31.2%, providing strategic stability but concentrating significant influence over the company's direction.

Chilwa Minerals (opens in a new tab) (ASX: CHW) has confirmed widespread clay-hosted rare earth element (REE) mineralization beneath its Mposa heavy mineral sands (HMS) deposit in southern Malawi, with 200 assays averaging 525 ppm TREO across an approximately 8-kilometer corridor. The investment question is no longer whether rare earths are present—they clearly are. The question is whether they occur in an economically recoverable ionic adsorption clay (IAC) form. Rare Earth Exchanges® view: The real opportunity is the emergence of a potentially "stacked" critical minerals project combining heavy mineral sands and rare earths, but metallurgy—not assays—will determine whether this becomes a commercial success.

One Mine, Two Opportunities? The Chemistry Will Decide

Every explorer hopes to find hidden value beneath an existing deposit. Chilwa Minerals may have uncovered exactly that.

The company reported widespread REE mineralization in clay horizons directly beneath its Mposa heavy mineral sands deposit, with 57% of the 200 samples grading above 500 ppm TREO and peak values reaching 987 ppm. Roughly 21% of the rare earth basket consists of higher-value magnet rare earth oxides—including neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, and terbium—elements that underpin permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, robotics, wind turbines, and defense applications.

The Assays Are Encouraging. The Metallurgy Is Everything.

Investors should resist equating assay grades with economic value. The company explicitly states it has not yet established whether the rare earths occur in a recoverable ionic adsorption clay form. It also notes that the current geochemistry alone is not diagnostic of an IAC deposit. That determination will depend on upcoming ammonium sulfate desorption (leach) testing at ANSTO, which will measure recoverability—the single most important value driver for clay-hosted rare earth systems.

Why This Matters

If recoverability proves favorable, Chilwa could evolve into an uncommon dual-commodity project, where heavy mineral sands and clay-hosted rare earths share infrastructure, permitting, logistics, and potentially capital costs. Those synergies could materially improve project economics.

Rare Earth Exchanges credits management for maintaining technical discipline. Rather than implying an economic discovery, the company clearly distinguishes confirmed geology from unproven metallurgy. That credibility matters.

For investors, the next catalyst is not another assay.

It is one word: recoverability.

Top Holders

Chilwa Minerals' share register is anchored by a mix of strategic corporate investors and insiders, providing a relatively stable ownership base. The largest shareholder is Portuguese-based Mota-Engil (opens in a new tab), SGPS, S.A., the Portuguese multinational engineering and construction group, with approximately 31.2% of the company. Other significant holders include Dreamers Holdings Pty Ltd. (5.81%), Basilio Paparone (5.58%), Harman Group Super Pty Ltd. (3.24%), Managing Director Cadell Buss (2.40%), and Kantirodopia Lda (2.14%). Together, these investors represent a meaningful concentration of ownership, suggesting that a substantial portion of the register is held by long-term strategic and insider stakeholders rather than short-term traders.

The dominant position held by Mota-Engil is particularly noteworthy. As one of Europe's largest engineering and infrastructure companies, its investment provides Chilwa with a strategically aligned shareholder possessing deep experience in developing large-scale industrial and mining projects. For investors, the concentrated ownership structure may provide management stability and long-term alignment, although it also means a relatively small group of shareholders exerts significant influence over the company's strategic direction.
