Viridis Clears a Major Processing Hurdle-But the Investment Case Isn't Finished

4 minute read.

Highlights

  • Viridis' Colossus demonstration plant achieved continuous Mixed Rare Earth Carbonate production with July recoveries of ~79% MREO and ~64% TREO, both above PFS assumptions.
  • Independent SGS laboratory validation and ongoing Solvay product qualification strengthen technical credibility with lenders and potential offtake partners.
  • While a significant processing de-risking milestone, key questions on CAPEX, OPEX, financing, and downstream commercialization remain unanswered ahead of the Definitive Feasibility Study.
  • Mixed Rare Earth Carbonate is an intermediate product; the highest margins reside downstream in separation, metals, alloys, and permanent magnets—links Viridis has yet to secure on commercial terms.

Viridis Mining & Minerals (ASX:VMM) announced that its Colossus demonstration plant in Brazil has achieved steady-state continuous production of Mixed Rare Earth Carbonate (MREC), while producing high-grade MREC meeting Solvay's product qualification specifications and exceeding metallurgical recovery assumptions from its Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS). Average July recoveries reached approximately 79% for magnetic rare earth oxides (MREO) and 64% for total rare earth oxides (TREO), both above PFS assumptions. The results will be incorporated into the upcoming Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS).

This is a meaningful technical de-risking milestone, not a commercial breakthrough. Continuous demonstration-scale operation provides far stronger validation than laboratory testing because it confirms the processing flowsheet, automation, and key engineering assumptions under commercial-style conditions. Financing, permitting, scale-up, and downstream commercialization remain significant hurdles.

The Hard Part Isn't Finding Rare Earths—It's Processing Them

Every junior miner can publish impressive drill results. Far fewer can demonstrate that rare earth ore can move through a continuous hydrometallurgical processing circuit, day after day, while consistently producing a saleable intermediate product.

That is the real significance of Viridis' announcement. The company reports reliable 24-hour operation using representative run-of-mine material from the first years of the Colossus mine plan while achieving recoveries above those assumed in its PFS. Just as importantly, the demonstration plant validated critical commercial-scale unit operations—including process automation, filtration, counter-current decantation, water recycling, and product handling—that often become the stumbling blocks between laboratory success and commercial production.

For rare earth projects, processing—not geology—is frequently where economics succeed or fail.

Why Investors Should Pay Attention

Higher recoveries can translate directly into greater rare earth production from the same ore while improving project economics. Equally important, Viridis reports that independent SGS laboratories are validating analytical results, and product qualification work continues with Solvay, one of Europe's leading rare earth processors. These developments strengthen technical credibility with lenders and potential customers.

The Questions That Separate Engineers from Investors

The announcement is encouraging, but technical validation is not the same as commercial validation.

Investors should now ask:

  • Will the DFS incorporate these higher recoveries into materially improved CAPEX, OPEX, NPV, and IRR projections?
  • What reagent consumption and operating costs were achieved during continuous operation?
  • Can these recoveries and product quality be maintained at full commercial throughput?
  • Will Solvay's product qualification evolve into binding long-term commercial offtake?
  • How much financing remains before Final Investment Decision?
  • What proportion of long-term project value will Viridis ultimately capture beyond producing MREC?

Notably absent from this announcement are updated economic metrics. While higher recoveries should improve project economics, Viridis has not yet quantified the impact on project value.

The Rare Earth Exchanges View

This release is stronger than many junior mining announcements because it presents measurable operating data instead of relying solely on promotional language. Recoveries are benchmarked against published PFS assumptions, third-party laboratory verification is disclosed, and the company acknowledges that optimization remains ongoing before commercial deployment.

Viridis has crossed an important technical threshold. It has demonstrated that its processing flowsheet can operate continuously under commercial-style conditions—a milestone many rare earth projects never reach.

But investors should remember that Mixed Rare Earth Carbonate remains an intermediate product.

The greatest strategic value—and typically the highest margins—still reside downstream in separation, metals, alloys, and permanent magnets. Until Colossus is connected to those higher-value links on commercially attractive terms, this represents an important technical milestone—not the completion of the investment case.
