That figure, however, is not a project valuation, reserve estimate, or net present value. Rather, it is a historical gross in-ground calculation derived from resource estimates published more than a decade ago. Although Mrima Hill possesses world-class geological potential, it remains a pre-development project facing significant environmental, legal, cultural, technical, financing, and downstream processing challenges.

Mrima Hill represents a genuine strategic opportunity—but it also illustrates one of the most common mistakes made in critical minerals investing: confusing a large resource with a bankable mining project.
Contained tonnes do not equal future cash flow. Investors frequently multiply historical resource estimates by current rare earth prices while overlooking metallurgy, recoveries, processing costs, permitting, financing, customer qualification, and community consent.
Even if a consortium wins Kenya's current tender, the project would still require updated resource confirmation, pilot metallurgy, feasibility studies, environmental approvals, financing, and downstream qualification before producing commercial rare earth products.
From the perspective of Great Powers Era 2.0, Mrima Hill also highlights a larger strategic reality. The competitive advantage no longer belongs simply to countries that discover rare earth deposits—it belongs to those controlling separation, metal making, alloy production, magnet manufacturing, and qualified industrial supply chains.
A World-Class Resource—But Not Yet a Commercial Mine
Historical resource estimates identified approximately 48.7 million tonnes of indicated material grading 4.40% TREO and 110.7 million tonnes of inferred material grading 3.61% TREO, together with significant niobium mineralization. Kenya Is Selecting a Developer—Not Approving a Mine
Mrima Hill remains in a government procurement process rather than an approved mining development. No preferred developer has been announced, no bankable feasibility study has been published, and no mineral reserve has been declared. Even under an accelerated development schedule, commercial production remains several years away.
Above-Ground Risks May Determine the Outcome
Mrima Hill's greatest uncertainties may lie above ground rather than below it. The deposit sits within a protected forest, national monument, and sacred cultural landscape of the Digo people (opens in a new tab). A previous mining license was invalidated after Kenyan courts found that required environmental and statutory approvals had not been obtained. Community sentiment remains mixed, making consultation, heritage protection, and social license essential to any future development.
The presence of thorium further complicates development by increasing radiation monitoring, residue management, permitting, and transportation requirements that could materially influence project economics.
