Highlights
- Zinc of Ireland targets early-2027 pilot plant using ARGO hydrometallurgical technology to recover gallium, germanium and indium from zinc-leach residues
- Solvomet, Core Resources and Nyrstar are supporting testwork and providing industrial feed material for the ARGO process
- China's 2023 gallium and germanium export controls and 2025 indium restrictions strengthen the strategic case for European domestic recovery
- EU critical raw materials targets require 40% domestic processing and 25% recycling by 2030, making ARGO potentially significant if metallurgy is proven at scale
- No feed grades, recovery rates, CAPEX or economic data have been disclosed, leaving the investment case unproven despite strong geopolitical rationale
The waste pile may be the mine. Zinc of Ireland Limited (ASX: ZMI) is accelerating its ARGO hydrometallurgical technology toward a targeted early-2027 pilot plant, seeking to recover gallium, germanium and indium from zinc-leach residues (ZLR). Solvomet in Belgium and Australia’s Core Resources are supporting testwork, while Nyrstar will provide leach products. The strategic logic is strong. The investment case remains unproven.
REEx Insight: Show Us the Recovery Curve
ARGO attacks an underappreciated Western vulnerability: critical metals can already exist inside operating industrial streams but disappear into residues rather than supply chains. ZMI says roughly 20% of zinc-smelter throughput becomes ZLR. But volume is not value. The announcement provides no feed grades, recoveries, product purities, pilot throughput, reagent consumption, CAPEX, OPEX or economic analysis. Until those numbers arrive, “game changer” remains management’s aspiration—not an engineering conclusion.
Europe Has the Residue. China Has the Leverage
The geopolitical thesis is real. The EU wants 10% domestic extraction, 40% processing and 25% recycling of strategic raw materials by 2030, while limiting dependence on any single third country to 65%.
China imposed controls on gallium and germanium items in 2023 and specified indium products in 2025. ARGO could therefore convert European zinc waste into strategically useful supply.
That could matter enormously. First, ZMI must prove metallurgy at scale.
