Tungsten West Secures UK Government Backing of Up to £71 Million for Hemerdon Restart

2 minute read.

Highlights

  • UK National Wealth Fund invests £36M in equity in Tungsten West, with a £25M debt facility and £10M uncommitted accordion to restart Hemerdon mine.
  • The UK government gains rights to negotiate offtake for up to 50% of 2025 Feasibility Study tungsten production, signaling strategic supply-chain intent.
  • Previous operator Wolf Minerals entered administration in 2018; Tungsten West has redesigned the project with first production targeted in Q3 2026.
  • Financing risk has fallen substantially with government backing, but execution risk—throughput, recovery, and operating costs—remains unproven.
  • Hemerdon represents a rare Western domestic tungsten source as China dominates global mine production.

Britain is putting government capital behind domestic tungsten. The UK National Wealth Fund is investing £36 million in equity in Tungsten West (opens in a new tab) (AIM), alongside a proposed £25 million debt facility and £10 million uncommitted accordion, completing the stated funding package to restart Devon's Hemerdon tungsten-tin mine. The government also gains a limited window to negotiate an offtake for up to 50% of 2025 Feasibility Study tungsten production.

REEx Insight: London Turns Geology Into Strategy

Hemerdon's importance extends beyond one mine. Tungsten is indispensable to hard metals, tooling, aerospace, and defense, while China dominates global mine production. Restarting a large domestic resource therefore converts British geology into strategic supply-chain optionality.

There is another signal here: governments are increasingly moving beyond critical-mineral strategies and putting public balance sheets behind actual production. NWF will own roughly 7.4% of Tungsten West after admission and gains board representation rights.

The Government Can Fund It. The Plant Must Prove It.

Hemerdon has history. Previous operator Wolf Minerals entered administration in 2018 after operational and financial difficulties. Tungsten West subsequently redesigned the project. Restart concentrate has already been produced, with final completion testing underway and first production targeted during Q3 2026.

But investors should separate funding from execution. The government offtake is not signed, the £10 million accordion is uncommitted, and Hemerdon must still demonstrate sustained throughput, recovery, and operating costs.

REEx verdict: financing risk just fell substantially. Execution risk did not. If Hemerdon performs, Britain gains something increasingly scarce in the West: tungsten produced at home.
