Lynas Rare Earths Targets New Feedstock and U.S. Magnet Expansion as Profit Surges

Aug 26, 2026

2 minute read.

Highlights

  • FY2026 net profit surged to A$222.4 million from just A$8 million a year earlier, with average selling prices up 59% to A$80.70/kg.
  • Interim CEO Pol Le Roux is in talks for new ionic-clay feedstock supply and exploring U.S. magnet manufacturing opportunities.
  • Lynas operates the only significant non-China rare earth mining and separation infrastructure at commercial scale outside China.
  • Analysts caution that announced capacity should not be confused with proven industrial throughput or true supply-chain independence.
  • Lynas appears to be evolving from a rare-earth producer into a broader ex-China integrated industrial platform.

Lynas Rare Earths is widening its ambitions beyond its Australian-Malaysian production chain, with interim CEO Pol Le Roux signaling talks for new ionic-clay feedstock and early discussions around U.S. magnet manufacturing. The strategy emerged as FY2026 net profit surged to A$222.4 million, versus A$8 million a year earlier, while average selling prices climbed 59% to A$80.70/kg.

The expansion reinforces a point Rare Earth Exchanges® made in its recent assessment of Western supply-chain independence: mining and separation alone do not constitute independence from China. As Creamer Media’s Mining Weekly accounts (opens in a new tab), a resilient system requires reliable feedstock, separation, metals, alloys, and qualified magnets operating together at commercial scale. REEx cautioned that announced capacity should never be confused with proven industrial throughput.

As we report frequently, Lynas is unusually important because it already operates meaningful non-China mining and separation infrastructure. But the new ambitions remain ambitions: no ionic-clay transaction or U.S. magnet project has yet been announced.

For investors, the direction matters. Lynas appears to be evolving from a rare-earth producer toward a broader ex-China industrial platform—precisely the integrated network REEx believes the West needs.
