Inner Mongolia Rare Earth Society Elects Northern Rare Earth Magnet Executive to Lead Industry Group

Highlights

  • Lian Hua, GM of Northern Rare Earth's magnet-materials company, was elected chairman of the Inner Mongolia Rare Earth Society at a 2026 membership meeting.
  • The Society's priorities include technology commercialization, standards development, IP protection and workforce training—not just production expansion.
  • China is building industrial clusters, R&D networks and standards-setting capacity that Western competitors cannot replicate with mines or separation plants alone.
  • Executives from Northern Rare Earth, Hefar Rare Earth, Ruixin and the Rare Earth New Materials Technology Innovation Center were also elected to leadership roles.

Inner Mongolia is tightening the links between rare-earth research, industrial policy and commercial production—with magnet manufacturing moving closer to the center of that network. On August 25, the Inner Mongolia Rare Earth Society held its 2026 membership meeting at China Northern Rare Earth, electing Lian Hua, general manager of Northern Rare Earth’s magnet-materials company, as chairman and legal representative.

More than 100 representatives from rare-earth companies, universities and research institutes participated. The Society says its priorities will include technology commercialization, industry analysis, standards development, intellectual-property protection and workforce development.

REEx Insight: China Is Organizing the Ecosystem, Not Just Expanding Factories

The important development is not the election itself. It is who is being placed at the intersection of science, standards, government and industry. Putting a magnet-materials executive at the head of an Inner Mongolia-wide rare-earth industry organization underscores China's continuing push downstream—from mining and separation into metals, alloys, magnetic materials, intellectual property and technical standards.

For Western policymakers, the lesson is structural. Building mines or even separation plants does not recreate China's competitive advantage. China is simultaneously developing industrial clusters, technical talent, applied R&D networks, commercialization channels and standards-setting capacity. These “soft infrastructure” capabilities can take considerably longer to reproduce than a processing plant.

From Laboratory to Factory Floor

Lian said the Society intends to create a regular platform connecting companies, universities, research institutes and government while accelerating the industrial deployment of advanced rare-earth technologies and research.

The organization will also conduct industrial-policy research, assess industry trends, participate in developing and revising technical standards, strengthen IP protection and expand professional training.

Other appointments reinforce the industrial breadth of the group. Executives and technical leaders were elected from Northern Rare Earth’s smelting operations, Hefar Rare Earth, Ruixin, the Rare Earth New Materials Technology Innovation Center and Tianjiao Qingmei.

The stated objective is to strengthen Inner Mongolia's competitiveness while supporting the region's development of its “two rare-earth bases”—a broader policy effort to consolidate the region's role as both a strategic rare-earth resource base and an advanced rare-earth materials industrial base.
