Mar 8, 2025

Highlights

  • Canada supplies over 18% of U.S. critical mineral imports, positioning itself as a key economic leverage point during trade disputes.
  • Canadian mineral exports totaled $150.7 billion in 2023, representing 21% of the country's total exports and highlighting its economic significance.
  • Potential U.S. tariffs could disrupt supply chains in defense, energy, and manufacturing sectors, potentially costing U.S. industries $11.75 billion.

Canada’s vast reserves of rare earth elements and critical minerals have become a key focus as a trade war with the U.S. escalates. A recent analysis highlights thecountry’s substantial mineral wealth, showing its strategic rolein supplying metals and minerals vital for the U.S. economy.

According to Newsweek (opens in a new tab), President Trump’s 25 percent tariffs on Canadian imports have sparked uncertainty and retaliatory threats from Ottawa. Some experts suggest Canada could leverage its mineral dominance to force concessions from Washington, given that it supplies over 18 percent of America’s critical mineral imports—more than China. Prime Minister Trudeau reportedly believes the Trump administration’s interest in Canada’s resources may even be fueling rhetoric about integrating Canada into the U.S. as a 51st state.

The economic stakes are immense, with Canada’s mineral exports totaling $150.7 billion in 2023, making up 21 percent of the country’s total exports. Trump, in a heated Truth Social post, linked tariffs to Canada’s role in fentanyl trafficking, while Canadian officials, including Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, dismissed integration talk as a serious political threat. Experts warn that the tariffs could severely disrupt U.S. supply chains, particularly in the defense, energy, and heavy manufacturing sectors, potentially costing U.S. industries $11.75 billion. With temporary tariff exemptions in place for USMCA-compliant automakers, the situation remains fluid, but Canada’s mineral reserves may soon become a powerful bargaining chip in the deepening trade war.
