The University of Texas at Austin has appointed Lorena Moscardelli (opens in a new tab) as the new director of the Bureau of Economic Geology and state geologist of Texas, marking a historic milestone as the first woman to lead the institution. Moscardelli, an industry and academic veteran with over 20 years of experience, previously led the State of Texas Advanced Resource Recovery (STARR) program, focusing on energy efficiency and resource profitability.
She succeeds Scott Tinker, who served for nearly 25 years and will officially assume the role on March 17. The Bureau, a leader in oil, gas, and environmental research since 1909, also pioneers work in hydrogen, critical minerals, geothermal energy, and carbon capture. Moscardelli aims to enhance collaboration across academia and industry while expanding the bureau’s role in education and resource innovation. With extensive experience at Equinor and a doctorate from UT Austin, she was chosen from a national search as the best candidate to lead the bureau into the future.
