China Rare Earth Society Establishes New Committee for Atomic-Scale Manufacturing Technologies

Dec 3, 2025

Highlights

  • China Rare Earth Society officially launched its Specialized Committee on Rare Earth Atomic-Scale Manufacturing Technology on November 22, 2025, in Xiamen to drive the sector toward industrialization.
  • The committee, chaired by Professor Zhang Zhenyu, will focus on interdisciplinary research, industry-academia collaboration, and solving core technical bottlenecks in atomic-scale manufacturing.
  • Officials emphasized atomic-scale manufacturing as a strategically significant, future-oriented industry with high innovation potential as China transitions from theoretical breakthroughs to commercial applications.

On November 22, 2025, the China Rare Earth Society held an inaugural meeting in Xiamen to formally establish its new Specialized Committee on Rare Earth Atomic-Scale Manufacturing Technology. Yang Zhanfeng, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the China Rare Earth Society, attended the meeting and announced the decision to form the committee.

Yang emphasized that atomic-scale manufacturing is a future-oriented industry characterized by extreme technical difficulty, high innovation potential, major strategic significance, and strong economic impact. He noted that China is entering a critical phase—transitioning from theoretical innovation and key technical breakthroughs toward industrialization. In response to national-level needs in atomic-scale manufacturing, the Society established this committee to strengthen interdisciplinary research, leverage the unique role of rare earth elements, and promote collaboration across industry, academia, and research institutions. Yang expressed hope that the committee would fulfill its responsibilities and contribute meaningfully to the Society’s development.

Professor Zhang Zhenyu, the committee’s inaugural chair, introduced the background and preparation work leading to the committee’s formation, as well as information about its affiliated institution, Soochow University. Meeting participants agreed that the committee should seize this rare opportunity to lead the development of atomic-scale manufacturing, align with China’s major strategic priorities, build a high-end platform for academic and industry-research collaboration, and organize efforts to tackle core technical bottlenecks. The committee aims to cultivate emerging talent and drive new breakthroughs in rare-earth-enabled atomic-scale manufacturing.
