Where the Numbers Come From
The REEx Price Panel. Traders, buyers, miners, refiners, OEMs and magnet producers who share completed trades, firm bids and offers, and market indications in confidence.
Company disclosures. Realized selling prices and other public disclosures, used to corroborate or challenge panel evidence.
Official trade data. Customs statistics, used as supporting evidence rather than as current spot prices.
How REEx Assesses Prices
REEx publishes monthly price ranges to support procurement and market analysis. Each range represents prevailing market value during the stated month for a defined product, origin, delivery basis and Transaction Size.
- We collect evidence from traders, buyers, producers, processors, OEMs and magnet makers, and check it against company disclosures and trade data.
- China means final production in mainland China. Outside China means final production elsewhere.
- Unless a row states otherwise, China prices are EXW at the producing plant, excluding VAT. Outside-China prices are CIF Rotterdam, excluding import duties and taxes.
- China prices are converted to US dollars at one exchange rate for the month.
- The gap is the percentage difference between the outside-China and China midpoints. Delivery terms differ between the two markets, so it is a cross-market price gap, not an exact origin premium.
- A second team member reviews every range and its rationale before publication.
- Verified errors are corrected openly, with a record of the change.

Rare Earth Price Questions
Why are rare earth prices shown as ranges?
Most rare earths are not traded on an exchange. They are sold in private contracts where price depends on purity, quantity, origin, delivery and payment terms. A range shows the representative market value supported by the evidence for that month, rather than implying a single quoted price.
What does “Purity 99%+” mean?
It means the product is at least 99% pure. For rare earth oxides, the percentage applies to both the total rare earth oxide (TREO) content of the product and the named oxide’s share of that TREO. Higher purity sells for more. Labels like 4N (99.99%) and 5N (99.999%) are industry shorthand for the number of nines.
Why do China and outside-China prices differ?
China dominates rare earth separation and refining and controls exports, and material produced outside China serves buyers who need supply outside those controls. The two markets also use different delivery terms, so REEx reports the difference as a price gap.
How is the price gap calculated?
Gap (%) = 100 × (outside-China midpoint ÷ China midpoint − 1). The midpoint is the centre of each range. For example, dysprosium oxide at $196–201/kg in China (midpoint $198.50) and $2,500–5,500/kg outside China (midpoint $4,000) gives a gap of about +1,915%. Because delivery terms differ, treat the gap as a guide, not an exact origin premium.
What is NdPr oxide?
NdPr oxide is a mixed oxide of neodymium and praseodymium, usually in a 75:25 ratio. It is the main raw material for NdFeB permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, defense systems and electronics.
Why does REEx track antimony, gallium, germanium and tungsten?
China has placed export controls on all four, which has split each market into China and outside-China prices and made reliable reference prices harder to find. Tungsten and scandium prices are coming soon.
How often are these prices updated?
Monthly. The month the prices cover is shown at the top of the page. From the second month on, each price also shows how much it moved since the month before.
