A newly launched Chinese scientific journal focused on artificial intelligence, robotics, smart materials, and flexible electronics has secured inclusion in Elsevier’s Scopus database barely a year after its debut—a remarkably fast timeline in academic publishing. The English-language journal SmartSys (opens in a new tab), launched in March 2025, is backed by the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission and hosted by the Beijing Institute of Nanoenergy and Nanosystems (opens in a new tab) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
While the announcement may appear academic, the broader significance is strategic. China continues building institutional infrastructure around next-generation technologies tied to AI, advanced manufacturing, robotics, and intelligent systems. The journal is distributed globally through Wiley Online Library and other international platforms as part of Beijing’s effort to expand the visibility and influence of Chinese scientific research.
The West needs to identify, comprehend and respond to China’s long-term strategy to strengthen scientific publishing, talent development, citation influence, and international academic standing alongside industrial expansion.
