About Mining & Beneficiation
Rare earth beneficiation is the step that turns mined ore into a mineral concentrate. The International Energy Agency says it starts immediately after extraction and that the concentrate reduces the volume of material needing downstream treatment (IEA, May 2026). Lynas reported in August 2026 that concentrate quality issues at Mount Weld during the June 2026 quarter affected productivity at its downstream cracking and leaching plants, and that it has since improved operating standards to better manage ore variation (Lynas 2026 Annual Report).
Where beneficiation sits in the rare earth chain
The IEA lists the stages as extraction, beneficiation, chemical upgrading, separation into oxides, metal refining, alloying and magnet manufacturing (IEA). Extraction is covered under rare earth mining, and the concentrate goes to cracking and leaching and on to separation.
How rare earth beneficiation works
Hard-rock ore is first crushed and milled to free the rare earth minerals from the gangue. The IEA says these steps take a significant share of operating energy and calls beneficiation highly energy intensive (IEA). A 2025 peer-reviewed review says no standard flowsheet exists and that each is designed case by case around a deposit's mineralogy (Gajendra et al., Science of the Total Environment, 2025). It compares four separation methods:
- Gravity separation uses density. Rare earth minerals run from 2.9 to 7.2 g/cm3, against about 2.5 to 3.5 for silicate gangue. Spirals, jigs and shaking tables work best on coarse grains and struggle in the fine fractions where rare earth minerals tend to collect.
- Magnetic separation works because bastnaesite and monazite are weakly magnetic and xenotime is paramagnetic.
- Electrostatic separation sorts dry grains by electrical conductivity. It is typically used on monazite and xenotime when the gangue has similar magnetic properties and density.
- Froth flotation remains the most important method for bastnaesite, monazite and xenotime. Collectors such as hydroxamic acids and fatty acids recover the rare earth minerals, while depressants hold back gangue.
How beneficiation differs by deposit type
In carbonatite ores, the rare earth minerals sit among calcite, dolomite, barite, fluorite and apatite (Gajendra et al.). For mineral sands, a wet plant washes the sand through spiral separators, and a dry circuit then splits the heavy minerals with magnetic and electrostatic plate separators (Geoscience Australia).
Ion-adsorption clays skip mechanical beneficiation. The IEA says they may be scrubbed before tank leaching or ion exchange, and its value-chain diagram shows clays going through heap or in situ leaching to a mixed rare earth compound (IEA). For peralkaline deposits, which can contain more than 20 rare earth-bearing minerals, the USGS wrote in 2017 that no routine processing methods existed and that procedures are developed deposit by deposit (USGS Professional Paper 1802-O).
Typical rare earth concentrate products
As of June 30, 2026, MP Materials held stockpiles of bastnaesite concentrate at Mountain Pass that it did not expect to process within the next 12 months. MP says the concentrate weighs significantly more than its rare earth content because it also contains non-REO minerals, loss on ignition and residual moisture (MP Materials second-quarter 2026 10-Q). The USGS reported in 2017 that Russia's Lovozero operation produced loparite concentrates and Indian heavy-mineral operations produced monazite concentrate (USGS).
Tailings from rare earth beneficiation
Many rare earth ores occur with thorium and uranium. The IEA says extraction and processing concentrate these radioactive materials into tailings and residues, and that monazite-rich deposits produce tailings that need long-term containment (IEA). The 2025 review names dry stacking and lined storage facilities as ways to keep tailings from leaching into soil and water (Gajendra et al.).
At Mountain Pass, MP says its dry tailings process avoids wet tailings ponds and dams and meets about 95% of its beneficiation water needs through recycling (MP Materials 10-K, February 2026).
Who runs rare earth beneficiation
The USGS estimates China accounted for 270,000 of the world's 390,000 metric tons of rare earth oxide mined in 2025; it publishes no separate figure for beneficiation (USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026). Operations outside China include:
- Mountain Pass, California (MP Materials). Under a strategy announced in November 2023, MP intends to reach about 60,000 metric tons of REO a year through more beneficiation capacity and lower-grade ore (MP Materials 10-K).
- Mount Weld, Western Australia (Lynas Rare Earths). Lynas said commissioning of the Mount Weld expansion was largely completed in the December 2025 quarter and the flotation process was running steadily at 70% of design capacity in December 2025 (Lynas).
- Eneabba, Western Australia (Iluka Resources). Iluka said in 2022 that its Eneabba stockpile comprised monazite and xenotime produced as a by-product of its Narngulu mineral processing plant (Iluka). In July 2026, it concluded an agreement under which VHM will supply rare earth concentrate as feedstock for the Eneabba refinery (Iluka June 2026 quarterly).
- Beylikova, Turkey (Eti Maden). Turkey's Nuclear Regulatory Authority granted an operating license on August 4, 2026, announced August 17, for the Beylikova pilot facility, covering its quarry, ore preparation and beneficiation, and storage (NDK). REEx described its output as mixed concentrate in June 2026 and said Turkey has not yet publicly demonstrated commercial separation (REEx).
Where beneficiation happens is a policy question
REEx reported on September 30, 2026, that Malawi's mining regulator had confirmed in writing that Lindian's beneficiated monazite concentrate from Kangankunde can be exported under the existing rules, and that the main risk is Malawi's draft beneficiation regulations, then under consultation until October 10, redefining sufficient value addition (REEx).
Frequently asked questions
What is rare earth beneficiation?
It is the step after mining that turns ore into a mineral concentrate. According to the IEA, hard-rock ore is crushed and milled, then concentrated by gravity separation, froth flotation and magnetic separation, which reduces the volume of material that needs downstream chemical treatment.
Which methods are used to concentrate rare earth minerals?
Gravity, magnetic, electrostatic and froth flotation separation. A 2025 peer-reviewed review calls flotation the most important method for bastnaesite, monazite and xenotime, using collectors such as hydroxamic acids and fatty acids, with the other methods supporting it depending on the deposit.
Do ionic clay deposits need beneficiation?
No mechanical beneficiation is needed, according to the IEA. Ion-adsorption clays may be scrubbed before tank leaching or ion exchange, or leached in heaps or in place, and the product is a mixed rare earth compound.
What happens to tailings from rare earth beneficiation?
They can carry thorium and uranium, and the IEA says monazite-rich deposits produce radioactive tailings that need long-term containment. At Mountain Pass, MP Materials says it uses a dry tailings process that avoids wet tailings ponds and meets about 95% of its beneficiation water needs by recycling.
Who produces rare earth concentrate outside China?
MP Materials makes bastnaesite concentrate by flotation at Mountain Pass, California, and Lynas runs a concentration plant at Mount Weld, Western Australia. Iluka said in 2022 that its Eneabba stockpile held monazite and xenotime recovered as a by-product of its Narngulu mineral processing plant, and Turkey licensed Eti Maden's Beylikova pilot facility for ore preparation and beneficiation in August 2026.
