Circular Materials Turns Industrial Wastewater Into a Critical-Metals Mine

Circular Materials targets industrial wastewater containing extraordinary metal concentrations—typically 1%–10%, or 10,000–100,000 ppm—and reports precipitation rates consistently exceeding 99.9% across highly variable metal-bearing waste streams.

The scale could be substantial. Bersani estimates Europe currently loses roughly 12,000–15,000 tonnes of mixed critical metals annually through industrial wastewater, including nickel, chromium, and copper. Preliminary company estimates suggest the U.S. opportunity could be three to four times larger.

The economics may be even more disruptive. Unlike conventional recyclers that purchase feedstock, Circular Materials is paid by manufacturers to take hazardous wastewater and then generates additional revenue by selling recovered metals. Bersani says the disposal business alone can be profitable, potentially reducing exposure to commodity-price volatility.

The company currently operates an authorized facility near Padova, Italy, and plans a much larger Ferrara operation targeting approximately 20,000 tonnes of wastewater and 1,000 tonnes of mixed metals annually. Circular Materials has also been designated a Strategic Project under Europe’s Critical Raw Materials Act and plans eventually to deploy at least three or four sites in the United States.

REEx Insight: The strategic breakthrough is not simply recycling—it is converting an environmental liability into high-grade, negative-cost feedstock. If scalable, industrial wastewater could become a distributed urban mine already sitting inside Western manufacturing infrastructure.
