About Indian Rare Earths Limited
Indian Rare Earths Limited is the former name of IREL (India) Limited; see the IREL (India) Limited record for the current company. This record is kept as a historical former-name entry.
IREL (India) Limited, the erstwhile Indian Rare Earths Limited, was incorporated on August 18, 1950, and is a state-owned enterprise headquartered in Mumbai, India, operating under the administrative control of the Department of Atomic Energy. Classified as a Mini-Ratna Category-I public sector undertaking, IREL is India’s principal producer of rare earths and beach-sand heavy minerals, mining and processing deposits along the country’s coastline.
IREL produces ilmenite, rutile, zircon, sillimanite, garnet and monazite. It operates mineral sands units at Chavara, Kerala, and Manavalakurichi, Tamil Nadu, and a Rare Earth Extraction Plant at its OSCOM unit in Odisha that converts monazite into mixed rare earth chloride. As the custodian of India’s monazite-derived rare earth resources, IREL is central to national efforts to build a domestic supply chain for neodymium, praseodymium and other rare earth elements used in permanent magnets, in partnership with bodies such as BARC and a planned rare earth permanent magnet initiative.
