About Korea Mine Rehabilitation and Mineral Resources Corporation (KOMIR)
The Korea Mine Rehabilitation and Mineral Resources Corporation (KOMIR) is a South Korean public corporation headquartered in Wonju, Gangwon Province. It was established in September 2021 by combining the Korea Resources Corporation (KORES, founded 1967) and the Mine Reclamation Corporation (MIRECO, founded 2006). It stockpiles minerals that South Korea depends on imports for, and since 2017 has lent stockpiled material to industry in normal times and released it during supply crises. In February 2026 KOMIR took part, as a support agency, in a trade ministry meeting at which the government’s rare-earth supply-chain plan was presented. Vietnam’s Institute for Technology of Radioactive and Rare Elements was reported in August 2026 to be working with KOMIR and KIGAM on processing bastnaesite rare-earth ores, and Frontier Rare Earths says KOMIR holds an 8.9% interest in its Zandkopsdrift project in South Africa.
