About STAMICO (State Mining Corporation)

The State Mining Corporation (STAMICO) is Tanzania’s state mining company. According to The Chanzo, it is wholly owned by the government under the Ministry of Minerals and was established under the Public Corporations Act through Government Order No. 163 of 1972, later amended in 2014. Its official website lists its address as Mirembe Road, Hazina Plot No. 173, Block W, Dodoma. The Chanzo reported that on July 24, 2025, Minister of Minerals Anthony Mavunde handed STAMICO a large-scale exploration and mining license for rare earth elements at Wigu Hill in Morogoro, marking its entry into large-scale mining. The license followed the government’s revocation of Wigu Hill Mining Company Limited’s license and a $27 million settlement, announced in November 2024, between Tanzania and Montero Mining and Exploration over the expropriation of Montero’s Wigu Hill project.
