About Steenkampskraal Minerals
Steenkampskraal Minerals refers to the rare-earth mining operation at Steenkampskraal in South Africa’s Western Cape province, run through the Steenkampskraal Monazite Mine (SMM) under the privately held Steenkampskraal Holdings group. The company describes the deposit as one of the highest-grade rare-earth and thorium resources globally, hosted in monazite ore and rich in critical magnet elements including neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium, as well as yttrium and thorium. Originally mined by Anglo American between 1952 and 1963, the project has been redeveloped as a pure-play rare-earth source, with strategic partner Bora Mining Investments providing capital, staffing and equipment. The operation is pursuing a phased route to monazite concentrate, mixed rare-earth carbonates and separated oxides, supported by Industrial Development Corporation funding announced in 2025 to build a Phase 1 metallurgical plant.
