Brazil's Monazite Gambit: Can ADL Mineração Move Beyond Ore Exports Into Rare Earth Processing?

May 8, 2026

4 minute read.

Highlights

  • ADL Mineração recently became one of the first private Brazilian companies in decades to export monazite concentrate internationally, targeting 500–1,000 tons by 2026 and expanding to 3,000 tons within two years.
  • The company signals ambitions beyond raw mineral exports, aiming to develop downstream rare earth processing capabilities in Brazil aligned with the national critical minerals strategy.
  • Despite promising positioning, ADL remains early-stage without proven large-scale separation infrastructure, facing technical challenges of monazite processing including radioactive thorium handling.

ADL Mineração appears to be an emerging Brazilian private mining company focused on monazite-rich heavy mineral sands and rare earth development, particularly in Rio de Janeiro state. The company recently drew attention after exporting its first container of monazite concentrate to Canada—reportedly one of the first notable private-sector exports of Brazilian monazite to international markets in years.

What makes ADL strategically interesting is not simply the export itself, but repeated indications that the company aims to move beyond raw mineral sales and participate in downstream processing within Brazil.

Several signals point toward a broader processing strategy.

First, in a recent BNamericas (opens in a new tab) interview, ADL explicitly discussed “rare earths and processing in Brazil,” signaling interest in capturing more domestic value rather than remaining solely a concentrate exporter. Second, multiple reports suggest the company intends to expand beneficiation and processing activities tied to its mineral sands operations, including upgrading and commercializing higher-value mineral products instead of exporting only raw concentrate.

Third, ADL’s positioning aligns with Brazil’s broader national strategy to expand domestic critical minerals processing capacity, reduce dependence on raw-material exports, and increase participation in global rare earth and strategic mineral supply chains.

That said, investors should remain cautious.

Exporting monazite concentrate is not equivalent to operating industrial-scale rare earth separation capability. Monazite processing is technically difficult because the mineral commonly contains radioactive thorium and requires sophisticated cracking, solvent extraction, waste handling, environmental management, and regulatory oversight. Brazil possesses historical experience with monazite processing dating back decades, but much of that industrial capability declined over time.

At present, there is no public evidence that ADL operates large-scale commercial rare earth separation infrastructure comparable to Chinese refiners or established midstream operators such as Lynas Rare Earths (opens in a new tab) (LYSCF) or Neo Performance Materials (opens in a new tab) (NEO) or for that matter MP Materials (MP) (opens in a new tab). The company does not have the refining pedigree of Carester (opens in a new tab) (although Carester resources are working in Brazil) nor the experience with radioactive material like Energy Fuels (UUUU). (opens in a new tab) The company is better understood today as an early-stage entrant attempting to position itself within a rapidly evolving Western Hemisphere critical minerals ecosystem.

What makes ADL notable is timing. Brazil possesses enormous rare earth and heavy mineral potential, yet its downstream refining and separation infrastructure remains underdeveloped. If ADL successfully advances into processing, it could represent part of a larger geopolitical shift: transforming Brazil from a primarily raw-material supplier into a more integrated participant in global rare-earth refining and industrial supply chains.

Profile

ADL Mineração is a privately held, 100% Brazilian company based in São Paulo, focused on the extraction, beneficiation, and commercialization of strategic minerals and rare-earth-bearing heavy mineral sands, including monazite, zircon, rutile, and ilmenite. Operating from its Buena unit in Rio de Janeiro state, the company recently became one of the first private Brazilian firms in decades to export domestically produced monazite concentrate to international markets, including Canada, with ambitions to expand exports to the United States and China.

Led by CEO Adelina Lee, ADL is positioning itself as part of Brazil’s emerging critical minerals strategy tied to electric vehicles, permanent magnets, wind turbines, and broader energy transition supply chains. The company aims to export between 500 and 1,000 tons of monazite by the end of 2026 and increase volumes to approximately 3,000 tons within two years. ADL also maintains a partnership with Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil (INB), reflecting the regulatory and technical importance of handling monazite, which often contains radioactive thorium. While still an early-stage relative to global rare earth leaders, ADL appears to be actively investing in production growth and potentially broader downstream participation in Brazil’s strategic minerals ecosystem.
