India Identifies 178,000 Tonnes of Cesium-Lithium-Rubidium Ore at Purulia, Plans Auction

Highlights

  • India's GSI identified approximately 178,000 tonnes of mineralized ore at Jhalda-II in Purulia, grading 0.4% cesium, 0.3% lithium, and 0.1% rubidium.
  • The block is slated for auction following G2-level exploration, but no mineralogy, recovery rates, or economic assessments have been disclosed.
  • Cesium, lithium, and rubidium are critical minerals, not rare earth elements, despite some media misclassification.
  • Theoretical contained metal figures suggest 712 tonnes of cesium, 534 tonnes of lithium, and 178 tonnes of rubidium in situ, but these are not reserves or recoverable production estimates.
  • India reports 10 additional potential rare-mineral projects at various stages in the Purulia and Bankura regions, signaling broader strategic ambitions.

India's central government has reported approximately 178,000 tonnes of mineralized ore at Jhalda-II in Purulia (opens in a new tab), West Bengal, grading 0.4% cesium, 0.3% lithium and 0.1% rubidium, according to Times of India reporter Kaushik Pradhan, citing a parliamentary response from Minister of State for Coal and Mines Satish Chandra Dubey. (opens in a new tab) The block has been identified for auction following G2-level exploration by the Geological Survey of India (opens in a new tab) (GSI).

Importantly, despite the original report calling this a “rare earth” discovery, cesium, lithium and rubidium are not rare earth elements. They are strategically important critical minerals.

REEx Insight | Interesting Grades—But Don't Calculate a Fantasy Dollar Value

Simple contained-metal arithmetic implies approximately 712 tonnes (1.57 million pounds) of cesium, 534 tonnes (1.18 million pounds) of lithium and 178 tonnes (392,000 pounds) of rubidium in situ.

REEx deliberately does not assign a U.S. dollar value to those figures. Doing so before knowing mineralogy, recoveries and saleable chemical products would be highly speculative. These figures represent theoretical contained metal—not reserves, recoverable production or revenue.

That distinction matters in Great Powers Era 2.0™. India wants to climb the value ladder from geological resources toward processed critical-mineral products. Purulia creates optionality; metallurgy determines whether that optionality has economic value.

The Missing Metallurgy

The Times of India piece points to nearby railways, highways and Ranchi airport as supporting economic viability. REEx would stop well short of that conclusion. No mineralogy, recovery rates, extraction flowsheet, capex, opex, product specifications, marketability study or economic assessment has been disclosed. G2 exploration improves geological confidence; it does not establish mine economics. The wider regional story may ultimately matter more: India says 10 additional potential rare-mineral projects are at various stages in Purulia and Bankura.
