China's Jiangxi province is pushing its traditional metals industry toward advanced materials, digital manufacturing and higher-value downstream products. Xinhua reports that Jiangxi Copper's high-precision copper-strip subsidiary achieved mass production during the first half of 2026 of a 0.03-millimeter alloy copper strip described as having strength comparable to steel. Jiangxi Copper's research institute also secured an order for copper-chromium-niobium powder for additive manufacturing, while its pilot-scale base is advancing more than 50 projects this year, including advanced copper and rare-earth functional materials.

REEx Insight | Watch the Infrastructure Between Laboratory and Factory
The Western takeaway isn't another Chinese factory. It is the industrial connective tissue surrounding it.
Jiangxi Copper says its large pilot-production base has shortened R&D cycles by roughly half. Jiangxi also hosts the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Ganjiang Innovation Academy and the National Rare Earth Functional Materials Innovation Center, established specifically to connect research, pilot-scale incubation, testing and commercialization. Government records confirm the center targets rare-earth magnetic, luminescent, catalytic and alloy materials as well as secondary-resource recycling.
This resembles what REEx increasingly argues the West needs: not simply mines and factories, but shared laboratories, pilot plants, testing, qualification, engineering talent and commercialization infrastructure connecting the chain.
Copper Gets Thinner—and Smarter
At Jiangxi Copper's high-precision strip operation, copper ingots are cast, hot-rolled, cold-rolled and cleaned before emerging as strip reportedly thousands of meters long and just 0.03 mm thick. Digital process controls automate threading and other operations while controlling thickness tolerances at the micron level. Digitalization extends upstream. Xinhua reports that Jiangxi Copper's Dexing Copper Mine is deploying 5G and AI to reduce worker exposure to hazardous frontline operations, while Zhangyuan Tungsten has connected more than 95% of key equipment across its increasingly automated tungsten-processing operation.
Rare Earths Move Downstream
The rare-earth implications are more consequential. Xinhua highlights JL MAG Rare-Earth, where rare-earth powder becomes sintered permanent magnets used in EV traction motors. Jiangxi's policy strategy explicitly prioritizes high-performance rare-earth magnets, high-purity oxides and metals, alloys and permanent-magnet motors.
But China's own government documents provide a useful reality check: Ganzhou officials acknowledge continuing weaknesses in some advanced rare-earth technologies, commercialization and research-to-industry integration.
China's system is formidable—but not frictionless. Rare Earth Exchanges® continues to monitor the intersection of the Chinese rare earth element monopoly and downstream research and development—this represents a core component of growth plans and the overall ascension of disruptive innovation across select materials science.
