LKAB Builds SEK 6 Billion Malmberget Plant to Feed Future Rare-Earth Supply Chain

2 minute read.

Highlights

  • LKAB has begun foundation work on a SEK 6 billion ($640 million) sorting plant at Malmberget designed to process 25 million tonnes of crude ore annually.
  • The facility will separate apatite-rich material to serve as feedstock for LKAB's planned critical-minerals complex in Luleå, targeting phosphorus and rare-earth products.
  • Environmental permits have been secured for both Gällivare and Luleå, with demonstration-scale process equipment already being installed at the Luleå site.
  • LKAB's nearby Per Geijer deposit holds approximately 2.2 million tonnes of in-situ rare-earth oxides, though commercial extraction remains unproven.
  • Analysts caution that REE recovery rates, separation economics, and customer offtake agreements are the critical metrics to watch as the project advances.

Europe’s rare-earth ambitions are beginning to acquire concrete and steel. Sweden’s LKAB (opens in a new tab) has started foundation work on a SEK 6 billion ($640 million) sorting plant at Malmberget, designed for 25 million tonnes of crude ore annually and scheduled for 2028 operation. The immediate purpose is modernizing iron-ore production, but the facility is also designed to handle apatite-rich material that LKAB eventually plans to convert into phosphorus and rare-earth products in Luleå.

REEx Insight: Follow the Material, Not the Ceremony

This matters because LKAB is assembling something Europe badly lacks: an integrated physical pathway from existing large-scale mining through mineral recovery toward rare-earth processing.

The Malmberget plant is not itself a rare-earth processing facility. That distinction matters. The ore will be crushed, screened, and magnetically separated; apatite-bearing material can then become feedstock for LKAB’s planned Luleå critical-minerals complex.

The encouraging development is that both projects have moved beyond PowerPoint. Gällivare received its environmental permit in June, while Luleå received its permit in May 2026 and already has demonstration-scale process equipment being installed.

Sweden Builds the Plumbing

LKAB also possesses substantial geological optionality. Its nearby Per Geijer resource contains approximately 2.2 million tonnes of in-situ rare-earth oxides, although these remain Mineral Resources—not reserves—and commercial extraction is unproven. The press release naturally emphasizes capacity, jobs, and modernization. Investors should watch the harder questions: REE recoveries, separation economics, product mix, capex, commissioning, and qualified customer offtake.

Still, Europe cannot diversify from China without infrastructure. Malmberget is increasingly becoming part of that plumbing.
