Maglut Heavy Industries (opens in a new tab) has emerged from stealth with $3.1 million in pre-seed funding and ARC-1, a chromatography-based system designed to separate rare earth elements in the United States. The Long Beach startup says pilot-scale processing of real-world feedstock produced individual rare earth oxides at 99.9%+ purity. That makes Maglut worth watching—but purity at pilot scale is not yet proof of commercial economics.

REEx Insight: Biotech Takes Aim at China's Processing Moat
Maglut is attacking one of the industry's hardest bottlenecks: separation. Instead of simply recreating China's enormous solvent-extraction infrastructure, ARC-1 adapts chromatography and proprietary resin technology used conceptually in pharmaceutical purification. Different rare earths interact differently with engineered ligands, allowing elements to exit sequentially.
The founders make the experiment particularly interesting. CEO and co-founder Curtis Wu (opens in a new tab) studied chemical engineering at MIT, later earned an MBA from Harvard, worked in biologics purification at Amgen, and subsequently moved into life-sciences investing. His career provides an unusually direct bridge between industrial-scale biological purification and rare earth separation.
COO and co-founder Azhar Yerzhanova (opens in a new tab) brings the commercial counterweight: NYU and Columbia training followed by investment banking, materials-focused venture capital, and commercialization experience at materials startup Nohbo. She has also been identified publicly as a Kazakh entrepreneur and Maglut co-founder.
Purity Is the Opening Bid
The technology story is plausible; the economic story remains unproven. Maglut has not publicly disclosed enough data on recovery, throughput, resin lifetime, reagent consumption, energy use, waste, capex, or $/kg separation cost to substantiate claims of global cost competitiveness. That matters because China's advantage isn't merely chemistry. It is scale, integration, accumulated process knowledge, feedstock access, and cost.
REEx verdict: credible founders, strategically relevant technology, encouraging pilot results—and a substantial scale-up test ahead. The number investors should demand next isn't 99.9% purity. It's cost per kilogram at continuous commercial throughput.
A Rival Chromatography Platform Is Already Scaling in Indiana
Maglut is not alone in trying to replace sprawling solvent-extraction circuits with chromatography. ReElement Technologies (opens in a new tab) has spent several years commercializing ligand-assisted displacement (LAD) chromatography developed through Professor Nien-Hwa Linda Wang’s research group at Purdue University. Published Purdue work provides unusually substantive technical backing: LAD has produced >99.5% pure Nd, Pr, and Dy with >99% yields, while newer work reports a 1,500-fold scale-up of the rare-earth process at ReElement’s Noblesville pilot facility.
ReElement is now attempting the harder jump from successful separation technology to industrial infrastructure, developing its Marion, Indiana commercial refining campus for multiple feedstocks, including ores, recycled magnets, and manufacturing waste; the Pentagon committed $25 million in July 2026 toward equipment at the site.
For investors, that makes ReElement an important benchmark for Maglut: both seek modular, aqueous chromatography alternatives to solvent extraction, but ReElement has a longer published research lineage and is further along the commercialization curve.
The unanswered question for both remains the one that ultimately decides whether chromatography can dent China's separation advantage: Can purity and recovery demonstrated in columns translate into sustained thousands-of-tonnes-per-year production at a globally competitive $/kg?
