Meteoric's Reserve Grows-But the Real Prize Lies Downstream

Jul 16, 2026

3 minute read.

Highlights

  • Caldeira's Ore Reserve increased 42% to 146 million tonnes, supporting over 20 years of planned production at 6Mtpa.
  • The reserve contains 517,000 tonnes of TREO and 126,000 tonnes of magnet rare earth oxides including Nd, Pr, Dy, and Tb.
  • Extensive metallurgical validation including ANSTO pilot campaigns and a Brazilian pilot plant operating since late 2025 significantly de-risks the project.
  • Non-binding MOUs with Neo Performance Materials and Ucore Rare Metals show commercial interest but fall short of binding offtake agreements.
  • Until downstream separation capacity and binding commercial deals are secured, Caldeira remains a promising upstream asset rather than a fully integrated supply-chain solution.

Meteoric Resources (opens in a new tab) (ASX: MEI) has materially strengthened the investment case for its Caldeira rare earth project in Brazil by increasing its Ore Reserve 42% to 146 million tonnes, enough to support more than 20 years of planned production at 6 million tonnes per year. The updated reserve contains 517,000 tonnes of contained TREO and 126,000 tonnes of contained magnet rare earth oxides (MREO). The company also reported higher geological confidence, extensive pilot-scale metallurgical validation, and continued progress toward its Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS). For investors, the story is no longer simply about exploration success. Caldeira is steadily advancing toward becoming a potential commercial supplier. Yet one critical question remains unanswered apart from the standard timeline questions: Who will separate its mixed rare earth carbonate (MREC)? Until downstream processing and binding offtake agreements are secured, much of the project's strategic value remains prospective rather than realized.

A Bigger Mountain—and a Longer Road

Rare earth investors have learned that size alone does not build supply chains. Meteoric announced that Caldeira's Ore Reserve has grown 42% to 146Mt at 3,546 ppm TREO, extending the planned mine life beyond 20 years while increasing confidence ahead of the forthcoming DFS. The reserve contains 517,000 tonnes of TREO and 126,000 tonnes of magnet rare earth oxides (Nd, Pr, Dy, and Tb).

Where the Numbers Matter

Several developments deserve investors' attention:

  • Ore Reserve tonnage increased 42%, even though average grade declined modestly following infill drilling that improved geological confidence.
  • Approximately 28% of the Ore Reserve is derived from Measured Resources, reflecting tighter drilling and a higher-confidence resource base.
  • Metallurgical confidence is supported by 433 diagnostic leach tests, 40 bulk slurry leach tests, ANSTO continuous pilot campaigns, and a Brazilian pilot plant that has operated continuously since late 2025—an unusually deep technical data set for a junior developer.

These represent meaningful de-risking milestones.

The Question That Matters Most

The announcement repeatedly emphasizes production of Mixed Rare Earth Carbonate (MREC).

That matters—but investors should remember that MREC is an intermediate product, not separated rare earth oxides, metals, alloys, or magnets. The industry's greatest bottleneck remains downstream separation and refining.

Meteoric has signed non-binding Memoranda of Understanding with Neo Performance Materials (TSX: NEO) and Ucore Rare Metals (TSXV: UCU). These demonstrate commercial interest but are not binding offtake agreements.

The REEx Perspective

This announcement is unquestionably positive. Caldeira increasingly appears to be one of the world's premier ionic clay rare earth deposits outside China. But reserves do not create supply-chain independence. Separation capacity does. China continues to dominate global rare earth separation, and until Meteoric secures a defined downstream processing pathway and binding commercial agreements, investors should view Caldeira as a highly promising upstream asset—not yet a fully integrated strategic supply-chain solution.
