China Geological Survey Intersects 22.4 Meters of Concealed Rare-Earth Mineralization in Sichuan

Sep 24, 2026

4 minute read.

Highlights

  • Drill hole TZK0301 penetrated over 100 meters of Quaternary cover to intersect three REE mineralized horizons totaling ~22.4 meters apparent thickness
  • Preliminary handheld-XRF readings report average TREO of 3.00% and a peak of 6.61%, pending laboratory confirmation
  • China's use of time-frequency electromagnetic and gamma-radiometric surveys to find concealed mineralization could expand the effective footprint of the Mianning-Dechang belt
  • The belt already hosts major deposits Maoniuping and Dalucao; Maoniuping alone holds ~9.67 million tonnes of reported REO resources
  • Western policymakers face a moving baseline: China is simultaneously improving exploration technology and downstream rare-earth capacity

Chinese geologists have intersected three concealed rare-earth mineralized horizons beneath thick cover in Sichuan's Mianning-Dechang rare-earth belt, an important Chinese carbonatite-alkaline-rock REE district. Drill hole TZK0301, completed August 24 at 413.85 meters, penetrated approximately 114.5 meters of Quaternary cover before encountering a mineralized fracture zone exceeding 200 meters in apparent thickness. Preliminary field logging and handheld-XRF measurements indicate three mineralized intervals totaling approximately 22.4 meters apparent thickness, with reported TREO averaging 3.00% and reaching 6.61%. Laboratory assays are still required to confirm those grades.

REEx Insight: The Bigger Discovery May Be Where China Can Now Look

As REEx featured in August, the grades are eye-catching, but the potentially more consequential development is China's improving ability to explore beneath geological cover. The exploration team combined time-frequency electromagnetic surveying with gamma-radiometric measurements, integrating the anomalies to select the drill target. TZK0301 subsequently encountered mineralization despite more than 100 meters of cover, where weak surface expressions make conventional exploration difficult.

If additional drilling demonstrates that this approach reliably identifies concealed mineralization across the district, the strategic implication extends far beyond one hole: the effective exploration footprint of an already important Chinese rare-earth province could expand into areas previously difficult to test.

That matters in Great Powers Era 2.0™. China's rare-earth advantage is not a fixed number on a reserve table. Beijing is simultaneously strengthening resource definition → exploration technology → mining → separation → metals → alloys → magnets → recycling.

This creates an important implication for the West's Transition Vulnerability Window™. Washington and its allies are racing to establish alternative supply chains, but the benchmark they are chasing continues to move. China can expand its strategic position not only by building more downstream capacity, but also by improving the technologies that locate additional resources beneath mature mining districts. In other words, Western capacity is growing—but so is China's ability to replenish and extend the resource base feeding its incumbent industrial ecosystem.

One Hole Is Not a Deposit

Context matters. The roughly 150-kilometer Mianning-Dechang belt already contains major deposits including Maoniuping and Dalucao. Geological research identifies Dalucao as the belt's second-largest rare-earth deposit after Maoniuping. Earlier this year, Chinese authorities reported that resource verification at Maoniuping established approximately 9.6656 million tonnes of REO resources, positioning it among the world's largest producing light-rare-earth mines by reported resources. TZK0301, however, is not yet another Maoniuping.

One reported drill hole cannot establish tonnage, geometry, continuity, mineralogy, metallurgical recovery, or economic viability. Nor should the >200-meter mineralized fracture zone be confused with 200 meters of ore: only three intervals totaling about 22.4 meters apparent thickness were identified as REE mineralized horizons in the preliminary reporting.

What Comes Next

The project team plans systematic core sampling and laboratory analysis, further work on mineralization controls and genesis, step-out tracing of the mineralized bodies, and additional drilling. Until laboratory results arrive, 6.61% TREO is an encouraging handheld-XRF field reading—not a certified assay grade. For Western investors and policymakers, the larger message is straightforward: China is still finding ways to expand the geological search space beneath an already formidable rare-earth industrial base.

The strategic race has a moving baseline.

Source caution: The originating September 24 report was published by China Natural Resources News, part of China's state natural-resources information system. The underlying discovery is corroborated by China Geological Survey reporting and separate Chinese mining-industry coverage. However, the reported 3.00% average and 6.61% maximum TREO values come from preliminary field logging and handheld-XRF measurements and remain subject to laboratory confirmation. No Mineral Resource Estimate, economic study, metallurgical recovery data, or demonstrated deposit-scale continuity has been reported.
