Baogang Group’s Northern Rare Earths division has successfully optimized its high-temperature alloy smelting process, increasing annual production by 100 tons and generating an estimated economic benefit of 700,000 yuan ($97,000). The innovation—an improved cooling system for alloy ingot molds—reduces cooling time from six hours to just three to four, boosting daily production capacity by 50%. This efficiency gain, achieved through internal employee-driven improvements, highlights China’s continuous advancements in rare earth alloy manufacturing, particularly in hydrogen storage applications.
The group makes these claims via media entry (opens in a new tab), so independent validation is needed.
China’s ability to refine and process rare earth elements at a rapid pace through state-supported industrial efficiencies offers further evidence of its position in the rare earth ecosystem. While Western nations focus on raw material extraction (aside from some activities including MP Materials, a national treasure trove in America), China is perfecting cost-cutting and efficiency-driven enhancements, working furiously to ensure its global dominance in processed rare earth products essential for hydrogen energy, advanced batteries, and high-tech manufacturing.
If the U.S. and its allies do not aggressively invest in refining and advanced materials engineering, they risk long-term reliance on China for critical supply chains in the energy transition and national security sectors.
