China's Unitree Robotics (opens in a new tab) has launched its STAR Market IPO roadshow, with investors closely watching what could become mainland China's first publicly listed humanoid robotics company. According to its prospectus, the company plans to raise approximately RMB 4.2 billion (USD632M) to expand embodied AI foundation models, new robot platforms, manufacturing capacity, and data infrastructure.

For the rare earth industry, however, the IPO is about far more than valuation. It illustrates China's broader industrial strategy of building not only the world's largest rare earth supply chain, but also one of the fastest-growing downstream industries that consumes high-performance NdFeB permanent magnets.

For years, much of the West has viewed rare earths primarily through the lens of mining and processing. China increasingly appears to be thinking several steps further downstream.

Humanoid robots, industrial robots, quadrupeds, autonomous systems, drones, advanced manufacturing, AI infrastructure, and intelligent factories all require large numbers of high-performance permanent magnet motors. While the United States races to rebuild separation, metals, alloys, and magnet production, China is simultaneously expanding one of the world's most magnet-intensive downstream industries. Building magnet factories is only part of the challenge. Sustaining those factories requires robust domestic demand.
IPO Reflects China's Robotics Ambitions
Founded in 2016 by Wang Xingxing, who serves as Chairman, General Manager, and Chief Technology Officer, Unitree plans to issue approximately 40.4 million shares, representing roughly 10% of its post-offering equity.
According to the company's prospectus:
- Unitree shipped more than 5,500 humanoid robots during 2025, which the company says ranked first globally.
- Between 2023 and 2025, the company sold more than 33,000 quadruped robots, establishing a leading position in that market.
Revenue increased from RMB 159 million in 2023 to approximately RMB 1.70 billion in 2025, while gross margins expanded from 44.2% to 60.1%. Management also acknowledged moderating growth during the first half of 2026 as competition intensified.
Embodied AI Drives the Next Phase
A substantial portion of the IPO proceeds will fund embodied AI model development, new robot platforms, manufacturing expansion, and large-scale data collection.
Unitree disclosed investments in both World Model Action (WMA) and Vision-Language-Action (VLA) architectures, including its open-source UnifoLM-WMA-0 and UnifoLM-VLA-0 foundation models. The company recently demonstrated its UnifoLM-OmniA-0.3 model performing autonomous household and eldercare tasks using multimodal interaction.
The prospectus also acknowledges that large-scale commercialization still depends on improvements in model generalization, dexterous manipulation, and operation in complex real-world environments.
Why It Matters
The strategic significance extends well beyond robotics. Every humanoid robot contains numerous permanent magnet servo motors, actuators, precision gear systems, and motion-control assemblies. As robotics moves from research laboratories into factories, warehouses, hospitals, logistics centers, and eventually homes, it could become one of the largest structural growth markets for high-performance NdFeB permanent magnets.
This is precisely the dynamic that defines Great Powers Era 2.0™. Countries are no longer competing simply to control mineral resources—they are competing to control the industries that consume those resources. China is building both sides of that equation.
