Viridis Secures the Power Before the Mine: Why a 3.2 km Transmission Line Matters More Than It Sounds

Jun 4, 2026

4 minute read.

Highlights

  • Viridis signed a binding turnkey agreement with a Brazilian municipal distributor to build a dedicated 3.2km, 138kV transmission line connecting Colossus to the national grid.
  • The fixed-price package, valued at approximately US$800,000, secures an initial 27MW power allocation with expansion capacity up to 90MVA, providing cost certainty and reducing construction inflation risk.
  • The power deal follows recent production of mixed rare earth carbonate from Viridis's demonstration plant and ongoing offtake discussions with refiner Solvay.
  • Key milestones still ahead include project financing, EPCM arrangements, permitting, a final investment decision targeted for H2 2026, and commercial commissioning targeted for H1 2028.
  • The announcement reflects a systematic infrastructure-first approach that mirrors the integrated ecosystem strategy needed to compete with China-dominated rare earth supply chains.

Viridis Mining & Minerals (opens in a new tab) (ASX:VMM) has signed its first major project execution contract for the Colossus Rare Earth Project in Brazil, securing dedicated grid power infrastructure ahead of a targeted 2028 production start. At first glance, a transmission-line agreement may appear routine. In reality, power, water, roads, permitting, and logistics are often where mining projects encounter costly delays. This agreement removes one of those risks and provides another indication that Colossus is progressing from development planning toward project execution.

The Infrastructure Investors Often Overlook

Mining investors tend to focus on drill results, resource estimates, and metallurgy. Project financiers focus on something more fundamental: whether the mine can actually operate. Viridis has entered a binding agreement with a Brazilian municipal electricity distributor to construct a dedicated 3.2-kilometer, 138kV transmission connection linking Colossus to the national grid. The turnkey package includes permitting, engineering, procurement, construction, and energization. The project secures an initial 27MW allocation while providing capacity for future expansion to as much as 90MVA. That matters because inadequate infrastructure has derailed more mining projects than disappointing drill holes.

A Genuine De-Risking Event—But Not the Final One

Viridis positions the agreement as part of a broader de-risking strategy that includes recent production of mixed rare earth carbonate (MREC) from its demonstration plant and ongoing discussions with refiner Solvay regarding a strategic offtake and technical partnership. That characterization appears reasonable. The fixed-price connection package, valued at approximately BRL 3.97 million (about US$800,000), provides cost visibility while reducing exposure to engineering and construction inflation.

Still, investors should not mistake progress for completion. Colossus must still secure project financing, finalize EPCM arrangements, advance permitting, reach a final investment decision, complete construction, and achieve commercial commissioning. The company's targets of FID in H2 2026 and first production in H1 2028 remain objectives, not guarantees.

The Bigger Supply Chain Story

The most important aspect of this announcement is not electricity. It is sequencing.

China dominates rare earth supply chains not because it built mines alone, but because it built integrated industrial ecosystems. Successful ex-China projects must do the same. Power, logistics, processing, financing, customers, and downstream partnerships all matter.

Viridis appears to be systematically addressing those requirements one step at a time.

The REEx Take

This announcement contains relatively little promotional language compared with many junior mining releases. The claims are specific, measurable, and tied to tangible project milestones. The omission is not what Viridis says—it is what remains to be accomplished. Investors should view this as a positive execution milestone and another step toward construction readiness. It does not eliminate project risk, but it does remove one meaningful obstacle.

In rare earths, projects rarely fail because of geology alone. More often, they fail because critical pieces of the development puzzle never come together. Viridis just placed another important piece on the board.
