Yangibana Clears Another Hurdle, But Financing and Wyloo's Exit Keep Investors Guessing

Jul 13, 2026

3 minute read.

Highlights

  • Updated DFS projects A$649M pre-tax NPV, 34% IRR, and 2.4-year payback for Yangibana's 19-year mine life producing NdPr concentrate.
  • Over A$160 million in infrastructure already installed, reducing construction risk, but final investment decision and project financing remain unsecured.
  • Joint venture partner Wyloo is actively marketing its 60% stake, signaling ownership uncertainty before any commitment to build.
  • NdPr oxide price assumption of US$110/kg relies on politically sensitive market conditions, adding volatility risk to projected returns.
  • Concentrate production alone captures limited value; true strategic upside requires downstream separation and magnet supply chain development still dominated by China.

Hastings Technology Metals (opens in a new tab) (ASX: HAS) says its updated Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) strengthens the investment case for the Yangibana rare earths project in Western Australia (opens in a new tab). The study projects a pre-tax NPV of A$649 million, a 34% IRR, a 2.4-year payback, and a 19-year mine life producing rare earth concentrate rich in neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr). But investors should recognize that this is still a feasibility study—not a final investment decision. The project remains subject to financing, while joint venture partner Wyloo (opens in a new tab) is simultaneously marketing its 60% stake. Rare Earth Exchanges® believes Yangibana represents one of Australia's more advanced NdPr assets, but execution—not economics on paper—will ultimately determine shareholder value.

A Rare Earth Project Inches Toward Reality

Feasibility studies often promise the future. Investors get paid only when projects become operating mines.

Hastings (ASX: HAS) and its joint venture partner Wyloo have updated Yangibana's economics using current costs, pricing assumptions, and existing infrastructure. The numbers are attractive: A$333 million initial capital, 37,000 tonnes annually of rare earth concentrate, 85.7% metallurgical recovery, and no reliance on inferred resources in the production schedule. More than A$160 million of infrastructure has already been installed, substantially reducing construction risk.

Where the Story Gets More Interesting

The biggest news may not be the economics. Wyloo is actively seeking buyers for its 60% interest. That suggests sophisticated capital believes Yangibana has value—but also highlights that ownership remains in flux before the Final Investment Decision. The updated DFS also assumes an NdPr oxide price of US$110/kg, consistent with current U.S. government support mechanisms, yet rare earth prices remain politically influenced and volatile. Financing has not been secured, and management explicitly states there is no certainty funding will be obtained.

The REEx Take

Yangibana is among the more advanced Western NdPr projects, with permits, infrastructure, and a reserve-backed mine plan already in place. Yet concentrate production is only the beginning. The real strategic value lies downstream—in separation, metals, alloys, and magnets—where China still dominates. Investors should view this DFS as an important milestone, not the finish line.
