I'm your host, Dustin, joined by my co-host Daniel, and our special guest today is Brian Busse, who is a 30-year veteran miner, a TV personality, and a jewelry designer. You've appeared on the Weather Channel's reality series Prospectors, and you're the founder of American Gem Trackers. Brian, welcome to the show. How are you doing?

Doing fine, guys. Thanks for having me on. I appreciate it.

Dustin Olsen (01:13)
Yeah, we're excited to have you here. I imagine you have a wealth of experience and knowledge, being in this industry for so long — probably so much that you ended up on TV, which is awesome.

Brian Busse (01:27)
I enjoy it, I always have. I've actually been a rock and mineral collecting guide and involved in mining for thirty-eight years. When you own gemstone mines, obviously you have to learn how to make jewelry, and I've mined metals — silver and gold, especially. Probably four or five years into my career, I found some rare uranium crystals, and I found some columbite-tantalite and a little bit of yttrium. So it sparked my interest. I was disappointed because there wasn't a lot to read and study on how to further my knowledge of that stuff. So I'm excited to learn — I've run into it quite a bit over the years, just little bits, and it intrigues me. Anything that's new science intrigues me, and I know the importance of this material to our country.

Daniel O'Connor (02:12)
Well, it's an honor to have you on. Obviously, Prospectors was an incredible show — it generated millions of viewers who wanted to learn about American mining in the Colorado mountains, in the Rocky Mountains. Brian, as we started Rare Earth Exchanges with a focus on rare earth elements and critical minerals, it's sort of been amazing — and we know each other. I've been up to your aquamarine mine, which is amazing. I recommend it to anybody: go up there, get a tour, dig for aquamarine. What happened to mining, Brian? Why did it go away? You're a miner — you're the real deal. You've been doing it for decades. Why did the culture of mining go away in America? What happened?

Brian Busse (03:26)
That's an excellent question, Daniel. In my escapades I see all these mines that were closed down after World War Two, and it bothered me that we didn't go back and keep utilizing, developing, and cleaning up our natural resources. Our country can't exist without natural resources, manufacturing, and refining — it just won't keep up. One of the big shocks when Prospectors came out is that it made the public aware you could actually go out and do it — that you could claim natural resource rights if you made a discovery, so it was possible to actually make it a small business. It caught on worldwide. Actually, the figures I've seen say it doubled the rock, mineral, and jewelry industries in four years. That was one of the most amazing impacts — it was very humbling for me to have a major part of that. And I realized we need corporations involved in this, but we also need those small miners. I've discovered one of the biggest loads of aquamarine in the world — for a hand-digging, hard-rock miner, that's very extraordinary. I've seen a thing from GIA that said they expect the American stone business to grow $1.2 billion a year for the next ten years. That's the most significant growth I've seen in my thirty-eight years of doing this. So there's a good outlook for that. And obviously we need to produce as much of our strategic metals, silver, and gold as we can — we need to develop it all. And rare earth minerals, I think, are at the top of the list.

Daniel O'Connor (05:38)
Yeah — what we've learned on this show and through our media platform, Brian, is that it's staggering how much of this activity was outsourced, mostly to Asia, and now we just depend on these other countries. But if China becomes adversarial, we're in deep trouble — in fact, that's a problem right now with our military. You need these elements to rebuild your supply chain — your munitions, your interceptors. But it all goes back to mining. You're the real deal — have you, since Prospectors, seen an increase in interest in mining? Do you feel like the field is growing back in the United States? Are you seeing a change?

Brian Busse (06:32)
Yes. I've seen it here, Daniel, and I've also seen the effects in other countries, where poor people are just trying to create jobs for themselves. In our country's history — during the Depression, and back in the 1800s — when times were tough, people would go out and try to strike it, trying to create their own jobs because nothing else was available that worked. So it's definitely economically driven. It takes capital, especially with rare earth elements — it's a combination where you need people like me who actually understand the science, and you need XRF guns and equipment so you can find those loads and turn them over to corporations that can refine and mine them at the level our country needs. We need it for everything — tech and a lot of defense as well. It's very, very important. There's not a household in the country that doesn't have this stuff in it.

Daniel O'Connor (07:53)
Absolutely. So from a prospecting perspective — you're very good at that — you have one of the most intriguing aquamarine mines in the world. I've been up there, I've seen it. But you also own other mines. How does it work today? First of all — without sharing any trade secrets — how does prospecting work? Is it more of an art, or a science, or both?

Brian Busse (08:26)
Daniel, I think it's science. I've mined over three thousand five hundred places — it's the willingness to do the hard work, the hard groundwork it takes. I've had a lot of wonderful mentors and people who've helped me. I got a hold of three or four mining engineering books from some of the elite colleges in the country and self-educated through those books, and then the rest is just going out and doing the work. The columbite-tantalite and the things I found in the past — some uranium deposits — were easy, because they had larger crystal structures you could identify. I think rare earth elements are similar to gold: ninety-five percent of it you can't see. You've got to have the ability to test it. I've done some nice studies with the Smithsonian, K-State, and other universities — I try my best to help some of the elite students in the country, and I'm willing to give them access to study the ore from my mine. I'd advise the rare earth element industry to do the same thing — we've got to get this stuff into the hands of students who have the funding, the equipment, and the professors behind them, so we can learn. That's the key to prospecting: something might start at one percent saturation, and if the right chemical trends can be identified, it could pop up to ten, fifteen, or twenty percent. Even with modern equipment, until you dig it, you don't know if you're going to hit one of those extremely hot spots. With this stuff being so valuable in small amounts, we've got to be able to test it and track it to the rock. I can do that visually with a lot of things, but it's impossible to do with rare earth elements without the equipment and the backing to do it.

Daniel O'Connor (10:54)
But Brian, that's similar to gold in a way, right? You know what to look for with gold — there are certain geologies, and you can see some traces of it, maybe as quartz. But you've still got to do a lot of hard work to break that rock down, or if it's in the gravel, or whatever.

Brian Busse (11:13)
Yeah — microscopic traces, yes.

Daniel O'Connor (11:24)
I wanted to ask you, Brian — today, as a prospector and a miner, how hard or easy is it to navigate the state bureaucracy? To get the permits, do all the business paperwork, and get what you need in place so you can start doing the hard work? Has the government made that relatively straightforward, or is it difficult, or somewhere in between?

Brian Busse (11:48)
For me, I've had great success. For a lot of people, if you start cutting corners, the federal government and the state aren't going to like it — it's a matter of safety, there are a ton of issues involved. The exciting thing about this for me is that it's a new kind of prospecting, and I enjoy a challenge — a very important challenge that every state in our country has to get behind. I think it takes cooperation, from the large corporations down to the small-time miners. Everybody needs to cooperate and team up on this. If we have a chance of overcoming it, it's going to take extraordinary cooperation and throwing everything reasonable at it — starting with the small-time miners. I've worked with a lot of big mines, and their people aren't trained like we are — they're very job-specific, focused only on the elements and compounds at that one mine. I think this is a bigger project than that. I'm not saying they don't have very qualified people, but they don't have experience going out and finding new deposits.

Daniel O'Connor (13:24)
What about gold? The price of gold has gone way up, and you've been accessing some gold mines lately — is the process with gold the same as it was twenty or thirty years ago, or has it changed? Is it still a lot of smaller prospectors and big companies coming in, or...?

Brian Busse (13:51)
I'm blessed, I guess — most of the refineries and the small mills that actually have room for guys like me are willing to work with me. They trust me. With silver and gold, you just have to have the ability to do fire assay tests and XRF tests. Daniel, I think the technology of the XRF machines is opening up the potential to help us solve the problems with all metals. I've always considered gold and silver to be very strategic stores of wealth too — them and gemstones are some of the oldest methods of wealth in the history of the world. And it's always intrigued me how rapidly the finding of new elements and new compounds formed with those elements has increased. There are very few elements that don't eventually form some type of compound, and the elements themselves you may not be able to see in the rock — but the compounds, once you understand the science, give you a chance to visually see it and start testing, whether it's lithium-based, carbonatite-based, or pegmatite-based. What's exciting is that a lot of these small mines' material was never checked out. So now you can go back and do an analysis and possibly find something they didn't even care about when they originally mined it — something that could make gold secondary instead of primary. And definitely in gemstones, because of the pegmatites.

Daniel O'Connor (17:01)
Could you explain that for the audience — a hydrothermal plume?

Brian Busse (17:10)
Okay, so a plume — on the inside of the mountain — is an area where heat and magma have risen up. When that plume cracks, you get fissures and veins coming out of it. That hydrothermal activity can inject — say, like at Mount Antero — the solution for aquamarine and beryl ten miles away from the actual source of the plume. One of the reasons my mine has so much volume, Daniel, is because of that plutonic plume and the fissures around it. Right outside that plume, the rest of Mount Antero and Mount White have two types of aquamarine- and beryl-bearing granite. We've discovered thirty-eight types of aquamarine- and beryl-bearing granite on my mine. The granite is altering ultra-fast — that's not normal. That's also due to that plume, one of the original sources of extreme heat from when the plates were breaking and the mountain went up. They've drilled at Mount Princeton hot springs down fifty thousand feet — that slip plane at Mount Princeton, a small mountain sitting on top of Antero, going way under it, is what brings the hot water to the surface. It's a close indication of how far down the heat is. When it was active, that's what the side of my hill produced. And when the government was testing for beryllium in the 1950s, my mine's saturation was determined to be four hundred fifty-three times more than Mount White and Mount Antero.

Daniel O'Connor (19:23)
Brian, I always want to ask you this — did you know something was there because of the government's beryllium testing in the '40s and '50s, or how did you come across it?

Brian Busse (19:43)
I'd done the legwork everywhere, and I'd seen it. When I started studying and reading up on it, I didn't want to go anywhere else. The California mine was seventeen times higher in saturation than Mount White and Mount Antero, and my mine was thirty-five times more than the California mine. So if I were going out to stake a claim — whether it was gemstones or metals — with today's technology, I'd check for that saturation. That is the discovery. One random pocket is one thing, but you have to check for saturation around it so you can start gauging the extent of the deposit. In pegmatites, it can be very random — you could hit one and not know it might be two hundred yards before you hit another. But in digging hydrothermal quartz and hydrothermal aquamarine, the saturation's there. It's the same with metals: you get into a big wad of metal and you're going to basically find most types of metal in that area — but you're looking for that saturation. How far does the gold penetrate into the host rock? Gold travels far because it's malleable — it microscopically breaks down in the vapor-liquid-solid zone when it solidifies. I'm intrigued because I think rare earth elements are going to have a lot of the same characteristics as gold, iron, lead, and copper — and a lot of it's going to have to do with temperature. Rare earth elements are like gold: they can hold up to the highest temperatures, like titanium, yttrium, iridium, and rhodium. So I think the key to finding them is finding those high-temperature zones and then testing for saturation.

Daniel O'Connor (22:27)
Yeah — the rare earth elements are used to make metal smart and intelligent: steel, airplanes, missiles, all these exotic elements need them. And the thing is, they're not rare — they're all over the place. The key is to get them economically. Rare earth elements are not rare, although heavy rare earth elements are even more difficult to obtain.

Brian Busse (22:52)
I agree, I definitely agree with that statement, Daniel. But to find them in a saturation that makes it economically viable — that's what's rare.

Daniel O'Connor (23:15)
Yes — it's rare to be able to mine them in an economical way. There's one producing rare earth mine in North America — in the United States, at least — the Mountain Pass mine in California. It's near the Nevada border, up in the high Mojave Desert, between Las Vegas and LA, toward the Nevada border. Now, one of the questions I wanted to ask you as a prospector — obtaining the licenses and permits and claims you need — is that all pretty straightforward? Has the government, whether state, county, or federal, made that fairly straightforward, or is it...?

Brian Busse (23:56)
I've studied the federal laws more, so I'm more familiar with those. I feel like the state laws — you obviously have to abide by them, and like everything, they're a lot more diversified. I think part of the education you guys are trying to do is going to inform everybody of the importance of this. Daniel, my hat's off to you and Dustin, because I can't say enough how important this is for our country — not to be dependent on other countries. I'm all for free trade and sharing, but we have to have some of our natural resources and the refining of our natural resources in our own country. We cannot be shut off from this stuff — it's part of every new technology we have.

Daniel O'Connor (25:06)
You know, this is the mission, Brian — you're part of a tradition and an industry, a way of life that's very important in American history, and you're still doing it. We celebrate that. What projects do you have going right now that excite you most in the world of prospecting?

Brian Busse (25:30)
My recent interests have been in taking today's technology and applying it to metals, including rare earth elements. In some simple testing I've done — iridium, it's...

Daniel O'Connor (25:52)
Brian, I think we're really interested to hear — especially you, you're the real deal. During Prospectors, which is when I first learned of you, I was really fascinated by how you had your whole family up there. It was a family effort — it was amazing. I was almost envious — I wish I had a family that would just go out and do stuff like that. Now, as hard as that world is — in terms of mining, and then your business and jewelry, because you don't make money unless you have commerce — you're not going to keep mining without it. Whether it's selling jewels or mineral specimens for collectors, or turning them into jewelry — how do you balance all that out? How can you be a prospector but also a businessman? What advice would you give to other people interested in that?

Brian Busse (27:00)
Well, Daniel, one of the ways I kept going was guiding — a small income — but what I learned to do was manufacture jewelry and basically grubstake myself and my family. The trade shows in Denver and Tucson were during the seasons when I could travel and sell. Obviously it's gotten easier because of online sales — when the TV show came out, it became a lot easier for me to just sell to my fans and people who were interested in what I do. It's just developed over the years, but it's not a lifestyle for everybody. Living out in the woods for eighty or a hundred days in the Colorado high country, and then doing the same for a month in the desert — most families aren't cut out for that. My family didn't want to stay home — they wanted to travel with me. I was fortunate; my sons and my wife enjoyed it, and we definitely had to watch every dollar to manage it. Like anything, the longer you do it, the more experience you get, and I'd pick up different jobs in the industry to help support the cause. I look back sometimes and I don't even know how I did it. It was extremely fun, very educational, but it took a lot of perseverance and living very modestly to get it done. The one thing about the way we did it — if eight months out of the year you don't have rent, a mortgage payment, or utilities — we'd go from living outdoors to affording a resort for a month, or a nicer place. It was a balance of the extremes, Daniel. And the problem with the TV shows is that it just makes it look easy — like you just go out there, hit the ground, beautiful stuff starts falling out, you stick it in a piece of gold, and boom, you made money. And it's not the fault of the people who made the show at all — it's complicated to mine and refine silver and gold and get it to a purity level where you can cast it. Same with stones — trimming them down and figuring out whether to set them as natural pieces, cabochons, or facets. And then there's just the cost of selling it. We were very fortunate that my wife's father-in-law lived in Tucson, so before and after the show we had a place to stay, which made it easier to prospect in the desert and attend the shows. I've done it long enough that I realized I couldn't just collect — I had to sell, and I had to sacrifice a lot of the value of what I collected because I had to match the importers' prices. With the exception of rare or perfect specimens — maybe the top ten percent of the quality of my gems — I had to bang heads with the importers. So I mined a lot of stuff and sold it very, very cheap. I don't have to do that anymore — the imported stuff has gone way up in value, which has made it easier for me to explain, and I think American people are starting to understand that top-quality American stuff is worth the money. But it's been a long time coming.

Daniel O'Connor (32:02)
I want to say, about Prospectors — the show, and what you and your family brought to it — I have a very warm feeling about it. It was an incredible show, and I think you guys made it. You were a true family operation — the real thing, not just a couple of pairs like a lot of the other folks on that show. Second, you brought incredible expertise in aquamarine mining — and it wasn't like the guy who found the topaz and got himself in trouble later. It didn't feel like he just waltzed in and picked up this giant topaz the way it did with you guys. The next thing, quickly, Brian — the survival and mountaineering skills that show highlighted, how you and your family lived, how dangerous it was on those slopes.

Brian Busse (33:18)
We just couldn't afford to go up and down every day, so it was sheer economics — we had to stay up there on the job, take a break when the weather didn't allow it, and get right back after it. I think our experience shined through on that show — our persistence. I've said it before: ninety-five percent of what I do is throw rocks and move rocks. I talked to some Bureau of Land Management people a few years ago in Tucson, and they said I probably had the largest hand-dug mine in the last eighty-year history of the country. I think back and it's like, no wonder my legs and arms are totally destroyed. I just never could afford to capitalize a million-dollar project to take it to the next level.

Daniel O'Connor (34:19)
Well, I think you're building enormous value — you've been an iconic figure, and you have a lot of knowledge we need in this country again, whether it's rare earths, critical minerals, or other metals. This has to come back. We started this show, started this website, because it's very clear, Brian — we need people like yourself, a veteran.

Brian Busse (34:44)
Thank you, Daniel. I appreciate that. You know, we buy anywhere from eighty million to over a hundred million dollars' worth of aquamarine from around the world every year. There's no reason we don't buy twenty percent of that from ourselves — and that goes for every stone. In any industry like that, we need to bring as much of it home as we can. When the gem industry really started, back in the late 1800s, San Diego was a major faceting center in this country — we need to bring that back. We can't compete with dollar-a-day or five-dollar-a-day labor, but we can produce machines that put us in a position to compete with that. I look at it differently than a lot of folks — one of the officers of the American Gem Trade Association told me that anything I touched or had a part of should appraise for thirty percent more, and I appreciated that. But at the same time, I felt like an appraisal is an appraisal — I haven't overpriced my stuff just because I was on a TV show, and if my new show gets sold and takes off, I'm not going to either. It's no different than a gold ring with some gems — what it's worth is what it's worth. One of the things that made my family stand out on the first show is that we didn't over-inflate the value of what we were getting, and I think that's one of the reasons we came across as more down-to-earth than some of the other people on the show.

Daniel O'Connor (37:04)
In my opinion, you guys really made the show — it was so unique, and it's exhilarating to see a family do stuff together like that. We need to bring this back, and we want to support you. As we wrap this down, Brian, how can we direct our viewers to your projects? A lot of investors come to this show, Brian — a lot of investors come to Rare Earth Exchanges.

Brian Busse (37:31)
Daniel, I've got a lot of footage — I found an editor who's a six-time Emmy-winning film festival videographer and editor, and he's reviewing the film with a modest investment. I think my film will be ready to sell — I'm at that point. I've got this silver and gold mining project — I'm ready to form a group that can, very economically, first start with gaining mineral rights and buying modestly priced properties we can mine metals or other gemstones off of. And you know how I am, Daniel — I'm not asking for extreme amounts of money. I've turned down extreme amounts of money because I didn't feel the potential investors took the time to come out and meet me — like you did. You were very intrigued, and after we dug together in a few places, we got to know each other. Probably one of the biggest parts of my story is that I haven't borrowed money to do what I've done. I have some decent assets because I started a natural resource trust — I set it up so it could grow as an asset, not just for immediate cash flow. But I understand that with investors, everybody wants to get paid and make money, no matter what they bring to the table. I'm willing to work with anybody interested in my projects — more than glad to discuss it with them. I'd encourage anybody to come out and see it, especially my aqua project — I've got some tremendous film.

Daniel O'Connor (39:41)

Brian Busse (40:16)
Daniel, I pretty much handle that myself — I don't go into great detail on the websites. I've got too many people watching me with bad intent, so I try to just handle that personally.

Daniel O'Connor (40:32)
I have to ask you this before we leave — have you had claim jumpers at Thank You Lord Mine?

Brian Busse (40:42)
Yeah, I've had some million-dollar stones stolen from me — the people got drunk and bragged about it in front of a bunch of my friends and showed it off. So yeah, claim jumping is a real thing. The nice thing is we're just a few years away from satellite technology putting an end to a lot of that.

Daniel O'Connor (41:10)
That's interesting, Brian.

Brian Busse (41:10)
I love the technology, man — it just makes it, and there's also the potential of exploring with drones. I don't know if I've shown you one of those videos a student did for me when I was helping him. I'm all about using the technology — the older I get, it's the stuff that's going to keep me in it.

Daniel O'Connor (41:39)
We want to help your business — I'm a big supporter and fan of yours. Again, the Thank You Lord Mine in Colorado, on Mount Antero, is open in the summer for tours and digging — it's an incredible experience. I took my son up to do it; it was a great time. We also went to a mine in Utah and did the same thing, along with your other gold mines. We'll put the information out. Dustin, any last-minute thoughts?

Dustin Olsen (42:14)
None at all. I think this has been really interesting — learning about the life of a miner and a prospector, the journey you've been on, the sacrifice you've made to make this a reality for yourself. If there's one takeaway, it's that: it's not easy.

Brian Busse (42:31)
Dustin, to answer that a little bit — for me, the payday is getting to spend so much time in nature, around my friends and my family, the people I love. I used to do a lot of hunting and fishing, and I guess it kind of turned into science class. But I love being outdoors, and I feel like — yeah, it's hard work, but I feel like I'm on vacation most of the time. So I really appreciate you guys, and I hope the audience enjoys this. As I think about this and develop it, I'm sure there are a lot of things we can do in the future to educate the public on the importance of what you guys are trying to do — kudos to you.
