About Mozambique

Mozambique's rare-earth potential runs along two lines, a hard-rock project in the northwest and monazite in the coastal heavy mineral sands. USGS does not list the country separately for rare-earth production or reserves.

Monte Muambe, in the Moatize District of Tete Province, is held by Monte Muambe Mining Ltda, a Maputo-based company whose parent is London's NeoTerra Group, formerly Altona Rare Earths. The plan is a mine and processing plant making a mixed rare earth carbonate that carries neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium. The U.S. Trade and Development Agency has funded study work meant partly to connect the developer with U.S. buyers.

On the coast, Kenmare Resources, which operates the Moma titanium minerals mine, produces a small quantity of monazite within a mixed concentrate. Its main products are ilmenite, rutile and zircon.

The state has taken a firmer hand with miners, seeking a free equity stake for the national mining company and local processing before export. Whether a developer can finance a carbonate plant on those terms, and who buys the output, will decide whether Mozambique moves beyond by-product monazite.
