Highlights

  • Teck Resources secured up to C$850M including a C$400M Canada Growth Fund equity-like investment to expand germanium, gallium, and antimony production in British Columbia.
  • The Trail Strategic Metals Initiative leverages existing polymetallic smelting infrastructure to potentially double germanium and antimony output without building new greenfield facilities.
  • A government offtake structure signals Ottawa's willingness to use both capital and purchasing power to counter China's dominance in critical technology metals.
  • Teck's parallel partnership with Titan Mining targets recovery of approximately 13 metric tonnes of germanium annually from New York's Empire State Mine.
  • Canada's brownfield modernization strategy may offer one of the fastest paths to rebuilding resilient Western critical mineral supply chains.

Canada has taken one of its most significant steps yet toward rebuilding Western supplies of critical technology metals. Teck Resources (opens in a new tab), backed by the Canada Growth Fund (opens in a new tab) and Natural Resources Canada's new Canada Critical Minerals Accelerator (opens in a new tab), announced a strategic investment framework that could unlock up to C$850 million to expand germanium, gallium, and antimony production at its Trail Operations in British Columbia.

The agreement includes a potential C$400 million equity-like investment from the Canada Growth Fund and establishes a government offtake structure for future production—underscoring Ottawa's growing willingness to use both capital and purchasing power to strengthen strategic mineral supply chains.

If fully executed, the Trail Strategic Metals Initiative could double existing germanium and antimony production while adding new gallium capacity, leveraging one of the world's largest integrated polymetallic smelting and refining complexes rather than constructing a new greenfield facility.

The announcement complements Teck's previously announced partnership with Titan Mining to recover approximately 13 metric tonnes of germanium annually from New York's Empire State Mine, illustrating a broader strategy to diversify critical mineral production across multiple assets.

Rare Earth Exchanges® Take: This is more than a refinery expansion. In the emerging Great Powers Era 2.0, Canada is emerging as a serious Western midstream competitor by pairing government capital, strategic offtake agreements, and existing metallurgical infrastructure. As China continues to dominate global germanium and gallium production, Ottawa is demonstrating that brownfield modernization—not just new mining projects—may offer one of the fastest paths toward rebuilding resilient Western supply chains.
