China Northern Rare Earth says its international trading arm achieved bulk sales of praseodymium metal during the first half of 2026 after developing a new application for the light rare earth in advanced permanent-magnet processing. The company reports that praseodymium was successfully tested for magnet grain-boundary modification and highly uniform diffusion targets, responding to manufacturers seeking to reduce reliance on expensive heavy rare earths such as dysprosium and terbium.
This is not evidence that praseodymium can simply replace Dy or Tb across high-temperature magnets. But the reported move from sample trials to batch commercial sales makes this more than laboratory experimentation.

This development deserves Western attention. China dominates Dy and Tb supply, yet its magnet industry is simultaneously developing technologies that use less of those strategically constrained elements. Northern Rare Earth now reports commercial progress using praseodymium in grain-boundary engineering and sputtering-target applications.
That could improve material efficiency and lower magnet costs while stretching available heavy-rare-earth supplies. For the United States and Europe, the lesson is important: supply-chain resilience cannot rely solely on finding more Dy and Tb. Advanced magnet processing that reduces heavy-rare-earth intensity is another competitive front.
The Chinese article, however, goes further by describing an application area involving "无重稀土磁材," best translated as "heavy-rare-earth-free magnetic materials." REEx would treat that claim cautiously without technical specifications showing magnet grade, operating temperature, and coercivity.
From Praseodymium Samples to Commercial Sales
Northern Rare Earth International Trading says its technical and commercial teams regularly visited sintered NdFeB producers, new-energy motor manufacturers, and other magnet companies to identify requirements involving grain-boundary diffusion, magnetron-sputtering targets, and high-end precision magnets.
Teams subsequently produced multiple batches of praseodymium-metal samples and conducted comparative diffusion tests. According to the company, those trials demonstrated the feasibility of using praseodymium for grain-boundary modification and high-uniformity diffusion targets.
The company says it then established a stable supply solution, promoted it to customers, and achieved bulk praseodymium-metal sales in the first half of 2026.
