About Baogang Group

Baogang Group, formally Baotou Iron and Steel (Group) Co., Ltd., is a Chinese state-owned industrial conglomerate headquartered in Baotou, Inner Mongolia. Founded in 1954 and reorganized in 1998, it is the largest steel producer in Inner Mongolia and operates the world’s largest rare-earth research and production base. Baogang controls operations around the Bayan Obo mining district, home to the world’s biggest rare-earth deposit, which accounts for a substantial share of global rare-earth reserves and production. Its rare-earth concentrates feed the light rare earths neodymium, praseodymium, lanthanum and cerium used in magnets, catalysts and alloys.

The group spans steel, iron ore, rare-earth extraction and processing, advanced materials and environmental engineering, and controls two listed companies: China Northern Rare Earth (Group) High-Tech Co. and Inner Mongolia Baotou Steel Union Co. In recent years Baogang has tightened control over Chinese rare-earth supply while expanding green and high-tech businesses.
