Lynas Rare Earths Confirms 2026 Takeover Talks-REEx Sees a Strategic Asset Becoming Harder to Price

Sep 2, 2026

2 minute read.

Highlights

  • Lynas confirmed it entered takeover discussions in 2026, though negotiations collapsed with the suitor still unidentified.
  • The company's Mt Weld mine feeding an ex-China separation chain in Australia and Malaysia makes it nearly impossible to replicate quickly.
  • A potential acquirer would be buying years of permitting, commissioning, and qualification time, not just reserves and cash flow.
  • Lynas previously explored a merger with MP Materials in 2024, but those talks failed over valuation disagreements.
  • The approach coincided with CEO Amanda Lacaze's retirement after 12 years, adding leadership transition risk to the strategic uncertainty.

Any guess who it might be? Other than MP, I'm thinking USAR as they are obviously on a buying spree. V

USAR has a ton of cash but in that neighborhood Sojitz and Shin-Etsu have more…couple more Japanese outfits like TDK and Proterial could be looking for a mine as well.
USAR seems to have enough on its plate for now

You are probably right; it was just a wild guess.
