More performance without premium materials. Northern Jiaxuan, a subsidiary of China Northern Rare Earth, has begun batch production of a self-developed 2.2-kilowatt rare earth permanent-magnet motor, with more than 200 units awaiting delivery to a rare earth project under construction. According to parent Baogang Group, the motor reaches 91% operating efficiency, exceeding China's Grade 1 energy-efficiency threshold for this motor class, while avoiding reliance on more expensive high-performance materials. The design targets low-speed, high-torque industrial applications, initially rare earth extraction mixing.

REEx Insight — China Is Extracting More Value From Each Magnet
The strategic signal is not a 2.2-kW motor. It is China's effort to get greater downstream performance without simply adding higher-cost magnetic material. Northern Jiaxuan says engineers optimized the magnetic circuit and stator-slot geometry to extract more electromagnetic performance from conventional materials. Combined with direct drive—which eliminates gearboxes and pulleys—the approach reduces mechanical losses, potential failure points, and maintenance requirements.
For Western manufacturers, this illustrates another dimension of China's rare earth advantage: materials efficiency plus application engineering. Rare earth security is usually measured in tonnes of NdPr, Dy, Tb or magnets. But superior motor design can reduce the amount or grade of magnetic material required for each unit of useful output. If replicated across larger motors and high-volume applications, that can stretch constrained material supplies and lower lifecycle costs.
Still, this announcement is not evidence of a fundamental magnet-material breakthrough. Baogang provides no magnet composition, rare earth loading, independent efficiency testing, cost comparison, or lifetime operating data. The commercially important question is whether these claimed advantages persist at scale.
From Gearbox to Direct Drive
The motor addresses a persistent problem in rare earth solvent-extraction operations: mixers characterized by high energy consumption, maintenance requirements, and equipment failures.
Northern Jiaxuan instead connects the motor directly to the load. Speed can be customized from 120 to 300 rpm, providing the low-speed, high-torque operation needed for different industrial conditions.
The company says it can manufacture permanent-magnet equipment across voltage classes up to 3.15 MW, offers more than 100 products, serves over 120 major mining and metallurgical customers, and has surpassed 2,400 units in cumulative production and sales.
That makes the 2.2-kW launch interesting as part of a larger strategy: convert Inner Mongolia's upstream rare earth advantage into higher-value motors and industrial equipment.
