Gansu Rare Earth Automates Rare-Earth Metal Electrolysis as 12,000-Ton Production Line Ramps

Sep 25, 2026

4 minute read.

Highlights

  • Gansu Rare Earth, controlled by China Northern Rare Earth and Baogang Group, is automating feeding, charging, and metal-tapping in its electrolytic rare-earth metal operations.
  • A new 12,000-ton-per-year high-purity rare-earth metals and alloys production line has entered production, integrating mixing, electrolysis, inspection, and packaging in a digitalized system.
  • Northern Rare Earth's 2026 filing reveals plans for a digital-twin platform for molten-salt electrolysis and ERP/MES/DCS integration, extending automation well beyond basic mechanization.
  • While Western projects invest billions to build new rare-earth supply chains, Chinese incumbents are digitizing and lowering variability inside plants with decades of operating experience.

Gansu Rare Earth New Materials Co., Ltd. is pushing deeper automation into rare-earth metal production, with a September 7 disclosure showing construction underway on automated feeding, charging, and metal-tapping controls for its electrolytic operations. Other September updates reveal a broader campaign targeting impurities, batch consistency, yield, energy, and material consumption. The developments are notable because Gansu Rare Earth is not a small experimental producer: it is a major Baiyin-based subsidiary controlled by China Northern Rare Earth, the listed rare-earth arm of Baogang Group. Northern Rare Earth owns 48.26% but identifies itself as Gansu's largest shareholder and controlling party.

REEx Insight: China Is Improving the Factory It Already Has

For Western competitors, the important signal is not one automation project. It is the continuous improvement of an established oxide-to-metal manufacturing system. Gansu's disclosures identify the mundane problems that determine whether metallization works economically at scale: impurity control, inconsistent first-pass quality, process deviations, material consumption, energy use, equipment reliability, and operator variability. Automation attacks several simultaneously. Feeding and tapping parameters become controllable and traceable; repetitive manual operations decline; and process data can increasingly feed closed-loop quality management.

That matters strategically. Western projects are investing billions to recreate rare-earth supply chains while Chinese incumbents are digitizing, automating, and lowering variability inside plants that already possess operating experience. Northern Rare Earth's 2026 report even identifies a Gansu research project developing a digital-twin platform for molten-salt electrolysis—evidence that the automation effort extends beyond basic mechanization.

Note that Northern Rare Earth's 2026 filing identifies Gansu projects involving ERP/MES/DCS integration, mixed rare-earth concentrate green extraction/separation and materials recycling, molten-salt electrolysis digital-twin modeling, alloy-composition rapid detection, and the high-purity metals/alloys line. Collectively, those projects make the automation announcement more strategically meaningful than it looks in isolation.

From Separation to Metal: Gansu's Industrial Footprint

Gansu Rare Earth's roots date to 1970, although today's joint-stock company was formally incorporated in 2003. Based in Baiyin, Gansu Province, it operates across separation, rare-earth metals, and functional materials. Northern Rare Earth's 2024 reporting listed annual capacity of approximately 58,400 tonnes of smelting/separation products, 7,400 tonnes of rare-earth metals, 5,000 tonnes of permanent-magnet materials, 8,000 tonnes of polishing materials, and 5,000 tonnes of hydrogen-storage materials.

The footprint is expanding. Gansu has since completed a 12,000-ton-per-year high-purity rare-earth metals and alloys production line integrating mixing, feeding, electrolysis, tapping, inspection, sorting, grinding, and packaging through an automated, digitalized production system. Northern Rare Earth says the project has entered production.

Why REEx Is Watching

Gansu therefore offers a useful window into China's less-visible competitive advantage: industrial execution between separated oxide and finished material. Its September disclosures show management simultaneously pursuing automation, higher yields, lower unit consumption, improved purity, and more consistent output. That is precisely the manufacturing layer Western supply-chain strategies cannot afford to overlook.

Source caution: Several operational details reported here originate from Gansu Rare Earth and China Northern Rare Earth, companies within China's state-owned Baogang industrial system. Statements concerning project performance, efficiency, quality improvements, and technical outcomes are therefore corporate/state-owned-enterprise disclosures and should be independently verified before being used for investment, procurement, or strategic decisions.
