About QIT Madagascar Minerals
QIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) is a mineral sands operation near Fort Dauphin in the Anosy region of southeastern Madagascar, structured as a joint venture between Rio Tinto and the Government of Madagascar. QMM mines mineral sands primarily to produce ilmenite, a major source of titanium dioxide, along with zirsill and monazite, a rare earth-bearing phosphate mineral. The monazite by-product contains light rare earth elements such as neodymium, praseodymium, cerium and lanthanum used in high-strength permanent magnets for wind turbines and electric vehicles, positioning QMM as a potential source of rare earth feedstock. The operation includes the deep-water Port of Ehoala, from which ilmenite is shipped to Rio Tinto’s iron and titanium processing facilities in Quebec, Canada, and to global customers. QMM has invested in renewable energy, connecting solar and wind power to its Fort Dauphin mine as part of a sustainable mining strategy.
