About Solikamsk Magnesium Works

Solikamsk Magnesium Works (OAO SMW) is a Russian producer of magnesium and rare-metal compounds, based at 9 Pravdy Street in Solikamsk, Perm Krai. It began producing magnesium in 1936 and started processing loparite, a complex rare-metal mineral, in the early 1970s. It processes loparite concentrate supplied by Lovozersky GOK in Murmansk region, recovering tantalum, niobium and titanium and producing an unseparated rare-earth carbonate. Under presidential decree No. 38 of January 26, 2023, its shares were transferred to the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom. SMW is an enterprise of Rosatom’s mining division, whose managing company is Rosatom Nedra. Natural resources minister Alexander Kozlov told Interfax in December 2025 that a rare-earth separation complex is being built on the plant site.
