These are numbers that force investors to look twice—and then read the footnotes. Brazilian Rare Earths (opens in a new tab) (ASX: BRE) has unveiled a scoping study for Rocha da Rocha (opens in a new tab) in Bahia estimating a US$7.9 billion post-tax NPV8, 89% IRR and 1.1-year payback, against US$969 million of capital to first oxide production. For REEx, the significance goes beyond spectacular economics: BRE already ranks among the most prominent prospective heavy rare earth upstream assets in the REEx Insights Rankings universe. The United States government should also take notice of this asset if it has not done so already.

REEx Insight | The Heavies Change the Story
China's greatest rare-earth leverage isn't simply NdPr. It is dysprosium, terbium and other scarce heavies.
BRE models life-of-mine averages of 247 tpa contained Dy+Tb, 989 tpa yttrium, 485 tpa samarium and 319 tpa gadolinium. Monte Alto's ultra-high-grade resource averages 810 ppm Dy₂O₃ and 150 ppm Tb₄O₇—exceptional concentrations versus the Western projects BRE selected for comparison.
But here's the crucial distinction: BRE plans to produce those heavies initially as an HRE+ concentrate, not separated Dy/Tb oxides. Someone still has to perform one of the hardest steps in the Western supply chain. Importantly, the company has retained French Carester to explore processing.
Extraordinary Rock Meets Industrial Ambition
Monte Alto's ultra-high-grade resource totals 3.4 Mt at 11.26% TREO, including 2.51 Mt Indicated at 12.73%. During the first five years, BRE models approximately 6,351 tpa NdPr oxide and 2,502 tpa HRE+ concentrate. Uranium revenue—and potential scandium, niobium, tantalum and titanium upside—is excluded.
The proposed architecture is compelling: mine, crush and ore-sort at Monte Alto, then haul concentrate roughly 260 km to Camaçari for hydrometallurgy and separation. BRE also models a lower-capital US$91 million concentrate-first pathway ahead of the refinery.
$7.9 Billion—With a Large Asterisk
This is a ±40% scoping study, not a feasibility study. Approximately 56% of the production target relies on Inferred Resources, and BRE says project development requires roughly US$969 million of additional funding.
Full NdPr oxide/HRE+ sales are targeted for 2031. Nonetheless, with each new study this asset becomes better, bigger and represents more potential.
What This Means for Investors
For investors, the story is simple: BRE may have found unusually valuable rock containing rare earths the West badly needs, but it still has to turn that rock into a profitable business. If the grades, recoveries and costs in the scoping study hold up through more detailed engineering, Rocha da Rocha could become an important non-Chinese source of both NdPr and scarce heavy rare earths. The upside could be substantial. Note the project still needs more drilling, technical studies, permits, customers and roughly US$969 million of development funding. It also needs a commercial solution for separating its heavy rare earth concentrate—an area where BRE's work with France's Carester could become important. In short: the geology makes BRE unusually interesting; execution will determine what it is ultimately worth.

Now BRE must convert extraordinary rock into proven metallurgy, financeable engineering, reliable HRE+ customers—and ultimately qualified ex-China supply.
