The House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources held a legislative hearing Tuesday examining three bipartisan bills designed to strengthen U.S. critical mineral development through improved resource mapping, advanced exploration technology, and streamlined permitting.
The legislation would reauthorize the U.S. Geological Survey's Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (Earth MRI) through 2031, establish a quantum-enhanced critical minerals mapping program within USGS, and expand eligibility for the FAST-41 permitting process by lowering the project threshold from $200 million to $50 million.
Subcommittee Chairman Pete Stauber (R-Minn.) said the measures would help the United States better identify its mineral wealth, reduce barriers to development, and lessen dependence on foreign adversaries.
