A rare earth permanent magnet weighs only a few hundred grams and contributes less than 1% of an electric vehicle's value, yet it represents roughly 40% of the magnet's manufacturing cost and can determine whether an entire vehicle, aircraft, robot, or missile gets built. The challenge facing Western economies is not simply mining rare earths—it is producing the separated oxides, metals, alloys, and high-performance magnets that China has spent decades mastering.

China's export controls have demonstrated that access, not price, is the industry's greatest vulnerability. According to the International Energy Agency (opens in a new tab), disruption to magnet rare earth supply chains could place approximately US$6.5 trillion in annual downstream manufacturing outside China at risk, with automotive, electronics, transportation, defense, and data centers among the most exposed sectors. Some experts in the field suggest the figure is significantly higher.

For investors, the implication is clear. Building a mine is only the first step. The real barriers lie in solvent extraction, metallization, alloy production, magnet fabrication, customer qualification, and securing specialized equipment and engineering talent. Every stage is capital-intensive, technically demanding, and increasingly geopolitical.

Companies that control multiple links in this value chain—and can execute commercially—will likely command the greatest strategic and financial value. In the emerging rare earth economy, the scarce resource is no longer simply the ore. It is industrial capability.
