Unitree Robotics Launches $900 Million IPO as China Pushes Rare Earth Advantage Into Humanoids

Aug 13, 2026

3 minute read.

Highlights

  • Unitree Robotics seeks RMB6.1 billion in China's first humanoid-robot maker IPO on the Shanghai STAR Market at RMB150.80 per share.
  • China's control of rare-earth separation, magnets, and motors creates a vertical supply chain advantage extending from EVs and drones into humanoid robotics.
  • JL MAG already delivers small-batch humanoid robot motor rotors, illustrating the rare earth to magnet to motor pipeline in action.
  • Robotics could exceed 16% of rare earth oxide demand by 2040 per Adamas projections, though forecasts carry significant uncertainty.
  • China's National Social Security Fund led strategic placement, highlighting state-backed capital mobilization as a competitive advantage in emerging tech sectors.

China's rare-earth machine is learning to walk. Unitree Robotics (opens in a new tab) has launched its Shanghai STAR Market IPO at RMB150.80 per share, seeking roughly RMB6.1 billion ($900 million) and potentially becoming mainland China's first publicly traded humanoid-robot maker. The offering attracted extraordinary investor demand, while Chinese banks, insurers, and state-linked institutions crowded into the capital stack.

REEx Insight | From Periodic Table to Robot

Robotics illustrates the next phase of China's rare-earth strategy. China's dominance across rare-earth separation, metals, and permanent magnets provides an industrial foundation for sectors built around compact, high-performance motors. Humanoid robots can contain numerous servo motors requiring powerful permanent magnets; Chinese magnet producer JL MAG already reports small-batch deliveries of humanoid-robot motor rotors.

The pattern should look familiar: rare earths → magnets → motors → EVs, drones, renewable-energy equipment—and now robots. This does not guarantee Chinese robotics dominance. Software, AI, reliability, economics, and mass-market demand remain enormous uncertainties. But control over upstream materials and downstream manufacturing can shorten development cycles and reduce supply-chain friction.

That matters to Western rare-earth investors. Rare Earths Americas, for example, explicitly identifies robotics (opens in a new tab) as a prospective magnet-demand driver, citing Adamas projections that robotics could exceed 16% of REO demand by 2040. Those remain forecasts, not guaranteed consumption.

Capital Joins the Machine

Unitree's IPO demonstrates another Chinese advantage: capital mobilization. Six bank wealth-management companies received allocations, while China's National Social Security Fund became the largest strategic-placement participant. Insurance capital also appears throughout Unitree's shareholder ecosystem.

At more than 200 times projected 2025 earnings, however, investors are already paying heavily for tomorrow's robot economy. The strategic lesson is bigger than Unitree: China is attempting to turn dominance of critical materials into dominance of the industries that consume them.
