About Spain
Spain has rare-earth deposits and its own separation technology but no rare-earth mine. USGS lists no rare-earth production or reserves for the country.
One deposit, Matamulas, lies near Torrenueva and Torre de Juan Abad in the Campo de Montiel area of Ciudad Real. There, gray monazite occurs as small nodules that the regional environmental authority described as high in europium and neodymium and, unlike most monazite, low in thorium and uranium.
Monazite averaged 0.27% of the mined earth, so the project was designed to dig about 1.2 million metric tons a year to sell a monazite concentrate. It needed water it had not shown to be available, in an area used by the Iberian lynx and the Spanish imperial eagle, and the authority issued an unfavorable environmental impact declaration on those grounds.
In Jaén province, ASX-listed Osmond Resources is exploring a lithified placer that carries monazite with rutile and zircon. In Madrid, the engineering group Técnicas Reunidas has made NdPr oxide at a pilot plant with its own RARETECH separation process, under PERMANET, an EU-funded magnet project it leads.
Whether Spain's separation know-how can find Spanish feedstock after Matamulas was turned down is the open question.
