Rare Earth Exchanges' latest analysis for subscribers finds that China's true advantage lies in an integrated industrial ecosystem spanning feedstock, alloy production, recycling, manufacturing, customer qualification, and export controls. The report profiles seven of China's leading magnet manufacturers and explains why investors should focus on qualified production—not simply installed capacity.

For years, investors have debated rare earth mining. They have been asking the wrong question. The real strategic contest begins after the oxide leaves the separation plant. It ends inside the permanent magnet—and increasingly inside the electric motor, robot, drone, or missile guidance system that depends on it.

Rare Earth Exchanges estimates global production of high-performance NdFeB permanent magnets reached 315,000–345,000 metric tonnes in 2025, with China accounting for 300,000–320,000 tonnes, or roughly 90% of global output. More importantly, China almost certainly commands an even larger share of magnets qualified for demanding automotive, industrial automation, robotics, aerospace, and defense applications, where process know-how and customer qualification create formidable barriers to entry. Direct magnet exports tell only part of the story. Millions of Chinese-made motors, compressors, actuators, robotics systems, and electronic products quietly carry embedded rare earth magnets that rarely appear in conventional trade statistics.
