About Atomic Minerals Directorate (AMD)

The Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) is a government agency under India’s Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), headquartered in Hyderabad with seven regional centres across India. Established in 1948 as the Rare Minerals Survey Unit, AMD is the oldest unit of the DAE and is mandated to identify, explore and evaluate uranium resources to support India’s atomic energy programme. Beyond uranium, AMD has a major mandate to locate and assess deposits of critical and rare elements including niobium, tantalum, beryllium, lithium, zirconium, titanium, thorium and rare earth elements, many of which occur in uranium- and thorium-bearing host rocks. The directorate has delineated major uranium resources across Jharkhand, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Meghalaya and Rajasthan, and vast thorium-bearing monazite reserves along India’s coastal beach-sand tracts. AMD employs airborne geophysics, geochemical surveys and drilling to advance India’s self-sufficiency in atomic and critical minerals.
