About Hitachi
Hitachi, Ltd. is a Japanese multinational conglomerate headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, and listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE: 6501) as a component of the Nikkei 225 and TOPIX indices. Founded in 1910, Hitachi operates across digital systems, energy, mobility, smart infrastructure and connective industries. In the critical-minerals domain, Hitachi pioneered technologies to recycle rare-earth magnets, developing machinery to separate and recover neodymium and dysprosium magnets from end-of-life hard-disk-drive motors, air conditioners and other compressors using a dry extraction process. Its former magnet-manufacturing subsidiary, Hitachi Metals, was a leading producer of NEOMAX neodymium-iron-boron sintered magnets before being acquired by a Bain Capital-led consortium and rebranded as Proterial in 2023. Today Hitachi’s rare-earth relevance centers on magnet recycling research, motor and electrification technologies, and its broad role across electrified mobility and energy infrastructure that depend on rare-earth permanent magnets.
