About Turkey
Turkey's rare-earth prospects rest mainly on one state-run deposit, Beylikova, in Eskişehir province. USGS lists no rare-earth production or reserves for Turkey.
At Beylikova, rare earths occur with fluorite and barite in a complex ore that also carries thorium. Because processing yields thorium compounds and radioactive waste, the Nuclear Regulatory Authority licenses the mine and plant.
The Presidency and Eti Maden put the deposit at roughly 690 million metric tons, a tonnage of ore, not of contained rare-earth oxide. Eti Maden, the state boron producer, runs a pilot plant at the site, and the energy minister has said the next stage is industrial-scale production that includes separation.
In the southwest, at Çanaklı in Burdur Province, the private company AMR Mineral and Metal has explored Aksu Diamas, a large, low-grade placer. British Geological Survey researchers traced its heavy minerals, including magnetite, zircon and rare-earth-bearing phases, to volcanic material eroded from the nearby Gölcük complex and reworked into loose sands.
The open question is whether Beylikova's thorium-bearing ore can be processed at a cost that competes with Chinese supply.
